Mit dem Aufschwung der chemischen, physikalischen und biochemischen Studien begannen dutzende Forscher, in Naturerscheinungen andere Ursachen zu suchen, als Offenbarungen eines Gottes.Während einige der naturwissenschaftlichen Denker einen religiösen Standpunkt vertraten, wurde für die Mehrzahl die kraftbegabte Materie zum Mittelpunkt der Weltanschauung. Zum Beispiel wendete sich Matthias Jacob Schleiden mit seiner Physiologie ausdrücklich gegen die Vorstellung einer besonderen Lebenskraft. Die Entdeckungen von Ludwig Büchner, KarlVogt und Jacob Moleschott sind in dem Zusammenhang hervorzuheben.Diese Hinwendung zur Stofflichkeit ist durchaus auch als Reaktion auf die einseitig empfundene Betonung des Geistes in der Philosophie der Idealisten und die Begrifflichkeiten von Schelling und Hegel zu verstehen. Die diskursive Dissoziierung, das Auseinanderfallenakademischer und für die gebildete Masse interessante praktische Philosophie, war nach der Märzrevolution 1848/49 in vielen Ebenen des kulturellen Lebens anzutreffen.Der 1822 in Holland geborene Jacob Moleschott studierte in Heidelberg Medizin, arbeitete als Arzt in Utrecht und lehrte ab 1847 als Privatdozent in Heidelberg Physiologie. Aufgrund des materialistischen und atheistischen Charakters seines Werks Der Kreislauf des Lebens aus dem Jahr 1852 verlor er 1854 seine Lehrstelle. Es folgten die Leitung eines privaten Laboratoriums und ein Ruf nach Zürich und später nach Turin. 1876 wurde Moleschott Senator des Königreichs Italien und später Professor für Physiologie in Rom, wo er 1893 verstarb. Neben populärwissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen auf dem Gebiet des Stoffwechsels und der Diätetik leistete er auch wichtige Beiträge zur Beschaffenheit und Zusammensetzung von Nerven und Blut. In seinem Buch über den Kreislauf des Lebens legte er den Gedanken von der Erhaltung der Kraft im Kreislauf der Natur in rein stofflichem Sinn aus. Im philosophischen Sinne berief sich Jacob Moleschott vor allem auf Ludwig Feuerbach. Seine Untersuchungen trugen jedoch eher zur Entwicklung der physiologischen Chemie bei.Moleschott betonte insbesondere die physiologische Abhängigkeit allen psychischen Geschehens, vernachlässigte jedoch historische und soziale und Umwelteinflüsse.
