FIRST EDITION of THE SECOND PART of Miscellanea - in FOUR ESSAYS - I - Upon Ancient and Modern Learning; II - Upon the Gardens of Epicurus; III - Upon Heroic Virtue; IV - Upon Poetry. This volume is the second part (of three), however each part is complete in itself, containing separate thoughts in separate essays. Sir William Temple (1628-1699), English statesman and essayist, whose literary works consist for the most part of short essays, which were collected under the title Miscellanea. The first part of his Miscellanea appeared in 1680. The second part of the Miscellanea (as per this copy) was first published in 1690 and augmented in 1692. The remainder of his essays appeared in Miscellanea, The Third Part, which was edited by Jonathan Swift (who served as Temple's secretary for the last ten years of his life) and was published in 1701 after Temple's death in 1699. Originally bound in full leather (though only the rear board remains). Laid paper. NOTE: A FAIR COPY ONLY.
