Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. Two Volumes in One, both dated 1829. On the front inside cover there is a small bookplate of a J. Eldred Brown with an Accension number(385), and the date 1885. Also a little red stamp from Pierce's Bookstore, 1714 Larimer, Denver, Colorado. Also on the front inside cover and facing the blank end pape…r there is a good deal of penciling of numbers. On the second blank end paper you will see the following handwriting: 'Pardon Handy's Book, East Greenwich, July 11th, 1832.' I found a Pardon Handy on the Internet who passed away in 1841 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. So this book has traveled around a bit. I've provided photos of the covers. The front cover is nearly detached, only one of the twined bindings is holding and that would likely give way with any use. The rear cover, on the contrary, is quite solidly bound. The gilt lettering and design on the spine is interfered with by couple of vertical scuffs and a vertical tear at the center of the spine's cloth, but not the textblock. A piece of the letter off the bottom edge of the spine is gone. The spine looks straight. The binding of the pages seems pretty solid. I didn't see any cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages. There is a frontispiece drawing at the start of each of the two volumes. One is of the Earl of Chatham, the other of John Horne Todke. There is another drawing on each of the first title pages, the first of Sir William Draper and the second of Lord North. Each title page seems also to have a second title page, neither seems to be half-title page. On these second title pages 1830 is given as the date. The pages are decent condition. I would describe the foxing as fairly light, although that's subjective. I only found a few corner creases. There are no markings. No attachments other than the label of Mr. Brown. No writing other than what I have already referenced. Due to the condition issues I have considerably discounted the price of the book. It would probably best find a home with someone who had some book repair skills.

Contact seller2-star sellerMarbled Bds & Calf Spine,Wings. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Reprint. Marbled Bds & Calf Spine,Wings. No Jacket. Reprint. Hardback. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. 216 pages; Vol. 1, only, of the 2 vol. set, originally published in England in the late 1700's, is critical of the policies and handling of the British government, includi…ng policy towards the colonies. These letters were written in 1769, and the Stamp Act was causing considerable trouble in the colonies. This situation , among many others, is given attention by Junius in his letters. Book condition: the cover is in rather good condition; this is the original cover-binding; brown calf spine is not cracked, but shows rubbing on the hinges, and the top 1/8th inch of the leather spine is pulled--with a 1/8th x 1/8th inch chunk missing on the right side; calf wings (on cover corners) are thoroughly rubbed, but boards are not showing; gold decorations and title on the spine are rather clear; binding is tight, and contents perfectly legible, but the endpapers show considerable past damp-staining, now foxed a tan tone; the rest of the text is foxed a considerably lighter tan, the three book edges considerably darker.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 'From The Latest London Edition. In Two Volumes.' I've rated these volumes Very Good, taking into consideration that they were published around 200 years ago. Had they been published 10 years ago the rating would be quite different. You can see the covers in the photos provided. They are pretty c…lean, a couple of spots. Volume 1 has a small bit of rub-through at the corners. The corners of volume 2 surprisingly have close to no wear. Both volumes have only minor wear at the edges. Volume 2 has a little bit of ruffled leather at the rear top edge, not reaching the level of rub-through. The gilt lettering on the spine has held up pretty well. Both volumes have slight loss at the top edge of the spine. The front cover of volume 1 has a thin semi-crack (though not at the gutter between the front inside cover and first front end paper). When you pull on this cover from the side, it has the slightest bit of give. So the binding there isn't perfect but it doesn't seem fragile or vulnerable. The bindings with regard to the other three covers are quite solid. There is a thin space between the verso of the first blank end paper and front of the second blank end paper in volume 2. I didn't see any other cracks or spaces between any pages in either volume. There is also a loss of paper at the middle of this first blank end paper in volume 2. These volumes may have a little bit of provenance. Each one has the bookplate of a J.W. Murphy MP. When I googled the name I got a short Wikipedia profile for a Joseph Warner Murphy who was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada, serving five consecutive terms between 1945 and 1962. He was born in 1892. He also penned his name on the first blank end paper of one volume and the second blank end paper of the other. There's also a penciled name of a Luther Beecher at the top of the title page of both volumes. A search of this name brought up a Luther F. Beecher (1813-1903) who was the author of a famous poem titled "Gone From My Sight," also known as the "Parable of Immortality" and "What Is Dying." Luther F. Beecher was a cousin of Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. With the exception of these signatures, there is no writing to be found anywhere in either of the two volumes. There is spotting/foxing. I would describe it as light to moderate. Both volumes have frontispieces. The foxing on the frontispieces and title pages is somewhat heavier. The pages are in solid condition. There are only a few tip of the corner creases. There is a crease at the middle of a handful of the last pages of volume 2. There are no markings anywhere in the book. And the bookplates are the only attachments. NOT ex-library.
