About this Item
Two Volumes in One, both dated 1829. On the front inside cover there is a small bookplate of a J. Eldred Brown with an Accension number(385), and the date 1885. Also a little red stamp from Pierce's Bookstore, 1714 Larimer, Denver, Colorado. Also on the front inside cover and facing the blank end paper there is a good deal of penciling of numbers. On the second blank end paper you will see the following handwriting: 'Pardon Handy's Book, East Greenwich, July 11th, 1832.' I found a Pardon Handy on the Internet who passed away in 1841 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. So this book has traveled around a bit. I've provided photos of the covers. The front cover is nearly detached, only one of the twined bindings is holding and that would likely give way with any use. The rear cover, on the contrary, is quite solidly bound. The gilt lettering and design on the spine is interfered with by couple of vertical scuffs and a vertical tear at the center of the spine's cloth, but not the textblock. A piece of the letter off the bottom edge of the spine is gone. The spine looks straight. The binding of the pages seems pretty solid. I didn't see any cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages. There is a frontispiece drawing at the start of each of the two volumes. One is of the Earl of Chatham, the other of John Horne Todke. There is another drawing on each of the first title pages, the first of Sir William Draper and the second of Lord North. Each title page seems also to have a second title page, neither seems to be half-title page. On these second title pages 1830 is given as the date. The pages are decent condition. I would describe the foxing as fairly light, although that's subjective. I only found a few corner creases. There are no markings. No attachments other than the label of Mr. Brown. No writing other than what I have already referenced. Due to the condition issues I have considerably discounted the price of the book. It would probably best find a home with someone who had some book repair skills. Seller Inventory # 005157
