About this Item
'From The Latest London Edition. In Two Volumes.' I've rated these volumes Very Good, taking into consideration that they were published around 200 years ago. Had they been published 10 years ago the rating would be quite different. You can see the covers in the photos provided. They are pretty clean, a couple of spots. Volume 1 has a small bit of rub-through at the corners. The corners of volume 2 surprisingly have close to no wear. Both volumes have only minor wear at the edges. Volume 2 has a little bit of ruffled leather at the rear top edge, not reaching the level of rub-through. The gilt lettering on the spine has held up pretty well. Both volumes have slight loss at the top edge of the spine. The front cover of volume 1 has a thin semi-crack (though not at the gutter between the front inside cover and first front end paper). When you pull on this cover from the side, it has the slightest bit of give. So the binding there isn't perfect but it doesn't seem fragile or vulnerable. The bindings with regard to the other three covers are quite solid. There is a thin space between the verso of the first blank end paper and front of the second blank end paper in volume 2. I didn't see any other cracks or spaces between any pages in either volume. There is also a loss of paper at the middle of this first blank end paper in volume 2. These volumes may have a little bit of provenance. Each one has the bookplate of a J.W. Murphy MP. When I googled the name I got a short Wikipedia profile for a Joseph Warner Murphy who was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada, serving five consecutive terms between 1945 and 1962. He was born in 1892. He also penned his name on the first blank end paper of one volume and the second blank end paper of the other. There's also a penciled name of a Luther Beecher at the top of the title page of both volumes. A search of this name brought up a Luther F. Beecher (1813-1903) who was the author of a famous poem titled "Gone From My Sight," also known as the "Parable of Immortality" and "What Is Dying." Luther F. Beecher was a cousin of Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. With the exception of these signatures, there is no writing to be found anywhere in either of the two volumes. There is spotting/foxing. I would describe it as light to moderate. Both volumes have frontispieces. The foxing on the frontispieces and title pages is somewhat heavier. The pages are in solid condition. There are only a few tip of the corner creases. There is a crease at the middle of a handful of the last pages of volume 2. There are no markings anywhere in the book. And the bookplates are the only attachments. NOT ex-library. Seller Inventory # 002669
