The author meticulously reconstructs the past through the lens of local governance, drawing upon a treasure trove of original documents, including vestry minutes and financial records. Readers are transported to a bygone era, where parish vestries, often convening in local pubs, grappled with issues ranging from poor relief and infrastructure maintenance to the management of the local militia. The narrative paints a vivid portrait of a close-knit community navigating the complexities of daily life amidst a backdrop of historical events, including the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.
