Ihre samtenen Oberflächen schlucken das Licht und verschieben sie ins Abstrakte: Phantome im Raum. In Ausstellungen unterschiedlich in Szene gesetzt, nehmen die Skulpturen Bezug zum Betrachter auf, ein Spannungsfeld zwischen öffentlichem Raum und privater Erfahrung entsteht.Inge Mahn (\*1943) studierte an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf und war dort bis 1972 Meisterschülerin bei Joseph Beuys. Gleich im Jahr ihres Abschlusses wurde sie von Kurator Harald Szeemann auf die documenta 5 eingeladen. Es folgten zahlreiche nationale und internationale Ausstellungen. 1983 wurde sie Professorin, erst an der Akademie der Künste, Stuttgart, dann an der Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin. Heute lebt und arbeitet sie in Groß Fredenwalde in der Uckermark.SKULPTURALE BEHAUPTUNGEN IM RAUM(Auszug aus dem Essay von Robert Fleck)Einige Skulpturen von Inge Mahn sind in einen Raum gefügt und erhalten daraus ihre Gestalt. Andere behaupten sich, Architekturen ähnlich, selbstbewusst und diskret in einem nicht näher präzisierten Umraum. Die weißen, unregelmäßigen Oberflächen weisen Spuren zahlreicher Arbeitsvorgänge auf und schlucken das Licht, das eigentlich durch die Großflächigkeit der Skulpturen und ihre helle Farbgestalt verstärkt werden müsste. Dieser Umstand erklärt die eigentümliche Präsenz der Skulpturen. Trotz der Verwandtschaft ihrer Formensprache mit der Minimal Art treten sie nicht aufmerksamkeitsheischend in Erscheinung und entwickeln aus dieser bescheidenen, formal aber sehr entschiedenen Haltung eine besondere Poesie. Ihre durchgehend weiße Gestalt und die unregelmäßige Oberfläche, die das Umgebungslicht bricht, rufen im Betrachter den Eindruck hervor, vor klaren Körpern zu stehen, die jedoch ähnlich wie Phantome den Raum, den sie definieren, nicht besetzen, sondern frei halten.Auch der zweite Aspekt der Skulpturen von Inge Mahn erweist dieses Werk als eine viel zu wenig beachtete Position in der dreidimensionalen Kunst der letzten Jahrzehnte. Jede Arbeit von Inge Mahn evoziert gesehene Dinge, meist aus dem Bereich der Architektur, verschiebt diese jedoch in einen subjektiven Bildmodus, durch die skizzenhafte Ausführung und durch die offensichtliche Unbenützbarkeit der Gestalt . Nicht unmittelbar kontextbezogene Arbeiten wie die Polizeikanzel von 1973, eine der ersten großen Arbeiten nach dem Verlassen der Kunstakademie, greifen Formen aus der öffentlichen Sphäre auf, in diesem Fall eine überdachte und erhöhte Plattform für verkehrsregelnde Polizisten. Sie bilden die Gestalt aber derart offensichtlich handgemacht und nicht funktional einsetzbar nach, dass eine schier unendliche Kette von metaphernartigen Bedeutungen entsteht, vom Humor über das Gehabe der Staatsmacht bis zur Evokation der Wachtürme der DDR entlang der damaligen innerdeutschen Grenze bzw. der ironischen Verbindung der Polizeikanzel mit der Kanzel des Predigers in christlichen Kirchen .In Zusammenarbeit mit Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin | Paris.
