Conil (1917-2003) "entstammt einer langen Ahnenreihe von Köchen, die für historische Persönlichkeiten wie Ludwig XVI. und Napoleon III. gekocht haben . Er wurde am Stanislas College in Paris ausgebildet und lernte bei dem berühmten Koch Auguste Escoffier. Nach seiner Flucht vor den Deutschen im Jahr 1940 fand er seinen Weg nach London. Er trat der britischen Royal Navy bei , diente als Koch und kochte für einen Admiral. Nach dem Krieg fand Conil Arbeit im Savoy Hotel in London. 1950 wurde er Chefkoch und leitender Manager beim Catering-Unternehmen Fortnum & Mason. Seine Abneigung gegen die englische Küche inspirierte ihn zu seinem Kreuzzug, den Briten das Kochen beizubringen. Zu diesem Zweck verfasste er 110 Kochbücher, gründete 1949 die International Academy of Chefs de Cuisine, war 1982 Gründer und Präsident der Society of Master Chefs, Rektor der Academy of Gastronomy und einer der ersten Köche, der mit Café Continental eine eigene Kochshow im Fernsehen moderierte, die Anfang der 1960er Jahre ausgestrahlt wurde. Conil war außerdem von 1955 bis 1958 Cateringleiter des Atheneum Court Hotels in London, von 1962 bis 1964 leitender Cateringmanager des Hurlingham Club in London und Ende der 1960er Jahre Dozent für Ernährung und Kochen am Hendo College of Hotel Administration" (aus einem Nachruf). - Schutzumschlag mit Randeinrissen, sonst gutes Exemplar. Offsetting to both sets of end-papers and evidence of tape residue caused by an old dustwrapper protector. Inscribed by the Author to the front free end-paper: "To Angela Kay/ my very precious/ collaborator/My very sincere/ Wishes/ Jean Conil/ 16.2.53". The dustwrapper is price-clipped to the front flap but otherwise is a bright and clean VG++ copy. Uncommon, inscribed. Photographs/scans available upon request. Signed by Author.
