paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. It is 1839 and Huw Pengellin is desperate to find a better life for his family than the one he ekes out in Wales. His wife, Martha, is fully aware just how foolhardy Huws schemes can be, but she is keen to escape the foundry slums, as well as Huws brother Gareth, with his hot eyes and roving hands. Might Colonel Wakefields plans to take settlers to the distant shores of New Zealand offer a solution? On the other side of the world, watching the new arrivals, is Hineroa, who is also desperate to find a better life. Will she be a slave for ever, will she ever be reunited with her people, and will the ships that keep sailing into the bay bring further trouble? Change is underway, not just for these characters but also for the crescent of beach, thick bush and steep hills that are about to become the bustling settlement of Wellington. A distant land, a new life, an escape from the past. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 154 pages, Condition: Dust Jacket very good, uncut, minor scratch front. Black binding almost mint. Contents very good, clean copy almost mint, except for owner name & 1989 inside front cover. This story is based on Chatwin's experiences of working at Sotheby's and a collector, and is about Kasper Utz Harbouring his private collection of Meissen porcelains, that Utz found a refuge from the horrors of the twentieth century. Compared with the exquisite reality of his figurines, rescued and safe in the illusionist city of Prague, the Gestapo and the Secret Police were to Utz `creatures of tinsel'. It was the colourful Harlequin, `the Trickster', with whom nondescript Utz most identified. Utz too was adept at wriggling into positions of advantage, at outwitting authorities - and the love of his own Columbine was nearer at hand than he knew. By modelling and remodelling the figure of Utz as each new detail about his life is unearthed, Bruce Chatwin offers an insight into the fictional process itself. Utz was Chatwin's last novel, and was published in September 1988, it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize Chatwin was very ill . Size: 14.5 x 22cm Approx.…
