This copy is from the library of Christopher Logue, an artistic contemporary of Gilbert and George, known for his involvement in the British Poetry Revival. Gilbert & George describe Dark Shadow as a living sculpt…ure in their introduction, "and so it proves. Eight chapters contain their musings on themselves, life and drinking, although not necessarily in that order. Given the rather po-faced image of British Conceptualism in the 1970s - all those bracing walks and earnest political tracts - this book is a witty and thoroughly tongue-in-cheek rejoinder" (Parr & Badger). The political nature of their work is identifiable in the royal iconography on the cover and title page, also referencing their professional ambition at the time: "Gilbert said they always wanted to be part of the establishment. 'That's why we put the royal coat of arms [of the United Kingdom] in our early works'" (Buck). They have since designed their own coat of arms, which features a large pubic louse as the centrepiece, and rejected this former ambition publicly, resigning from the Royal Academy in 2020: "You have to be an outsider to do art, you can't be normal" (Butter).
