Erstausgabe des Hauptwerks von Linhart.- "Vorliegendes Compendium habe ich in der Absicht geschrieben, Schülern und Anfängern das Studium der operativen Chirurgie zu erleichtern . Die beigefügten Abbildungen gehören theils der Anatomie, theils dem operativen Theile an, letztere stellen namentlich bei Amputationen und Enucleationen meist nur die Richtungslinien der Schnitte und die gewohnnenen Resultate dar." (Linhart in der Vorrede). Wenzel von Linhart (Seelowitz, Mähren 1821 - 1877 Würzburg) war ,österreichischer Mediziner. Er war Hofrat, Professor der Chirurgie und Oberwundarzt des Juliusspitals zu Würzburg. Im Herbst 1838 begann er ein Studium der Medizin in Wien, bei Josef von Berres (1796-1844), wo er 1844 zum Doktor der Medizin promoviert wurde. Im Februar 1845 kam er als Assistent an das von Joseph Wattmann von Maëlcamp-Beaulieu geleitete kaiserlich-königliche Operationsinstitut, wo er nach zweijährigem Kurs Doktor der Chirurgie wurde und das Diplom als k. k. Operateur erhielt. Von 1845 bis 1849 war er Vorlesungsassistent seines vorherigen Lehrers Johann von Dumreicher über chirurgische Nosologie und Operationslehre und gleichzeitig vom Februar 1847 bis zum März 1849 Secundärchirurg an der II. Chirurgischen Klinik im k. k. allgemeinen Krankenhaus in Wien. Oktober/November 1848 war er Chirurg im Notspital im Augarten. Im April 1856 wurde Linhart gegen den Widerstand von Cajetan von Textor, dessen Sohn Karl Textor 1855 vertretungsweise die chirurgische Klinik leitete, als Nachfolger des 1855 verstorbenen Adolf Morawek (1816-1855) als Ordinarius der Chirurgischen Klinik und Oberwundarzt des Juliusspitals nach Würzburg berufen.- Papier etw. gebräunt und durchgehend stockfleckig.

Vorsatz und die ersten Seiten sind sehr stark stockfleckig, ebenso Nachsatz und letzte Seiten. Die übrigen Seiten sind zeittypisch schwach stockfleckig und altersbraun, ansonsten gut. Reste eines entfernten Stempels auf dem Titelblatt und der letzten Seite; ausdrucksvolle zeitgenössische Besitzersignatur im Vorsatz. Mit 190 Holzschnitten Wenzel von Linhard wurde am 6.Juni 1821 in Groß-Seelowitz geboren. Wenzel von Linhart hatte in Wien studiert, dort 1844 promoviert, und war anschließend Assistent der Chirurgen Joseph von Wattmann (17891866) und Johann von Dumreicher (18151880), unter dem er sich 1852 habilitierte. Er veröffentlichte eine Reihe von Arbeiten, so z. B. über Leistenbrüche, Wasserbrüche, Frakturen, kalte Abszesse und eine Studie über die topographischen Beziehungen zwischen der Arteria carotis interna und den Tonsillen. Sein "Kompendium der chirurgischen Operationslehre" erlebte zwischen 1856 und 1874 vier Auflagen. Für seine Verdienste um die Verwundeten des Krieges 1866 wurde er zum Hofrat ernannt und in den persönlichen Adelsstand erhoben. Auch im Krieg von 1870/71 wirkte von Linhart als bayerischer Generalarzt und wetteiferte mit anderen großen Chirurgen der Zeit (Friedrich von Esmarch, Richard von Volkmann, Franz König, Eduard Albert und Max Schede). In seinem letzten Lebensjahr musste Linhart wegen einer starken Schwerhörigkeit seine Tätigkeit wesentlich einschränken. Wenzel von Linhart war ein großer Arzt, der keinen Unterschied zwischen arm und reich kannte, und der nicht nur wegen seines operativen Talentes und seiner manuellen Geschicklichkeit, sondern auch wegen seiner absoluten Ruhe und Beherrschung in kritischen Situationen berühmt war. Er war ein beliebter Lehrer, dessen Darstellungen vorbildlich an Klarheit und Knappheit waren und auf anatomischen Grundlagen basierten. Wenzel Linhart starb am 22.Oktober 1877 in Würzburg.
