London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1887. 4to (28.5 x 22.8 cm cm). vii, lxviii, 275 pp.; 51 lithographed plates of which several in chromolithography; 11 text engravings, one folded map. Later red half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. = A finely illustrated monograph dealing with the demospongiae. They include over 75% of all species of sponges with nearly 8,800 species worldwide (World Porifera Database). The author, the reverend Stuart Oliver Ridley (1853-1935) was a zoologist working at the British Museum of Natural History in London. As part of the Challenger Reports volume XX (20), this work is usually found bound up with a few other monographs, but this copy is without 'ballast'. Folded map cut in two by a careless book binder; however, no other flaws: plates and text leaves clean. A very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 3419 [Ridley]; 4754 [the Challenger Reports in general].
