Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Type: Book This is a study of aircraft, from biplanes to monoplanes between the years 1919-39. The book is part of a 12-volume series, which covers the production and operation of aircraft worldwide. Each volume is devoted to essays on aircraft types, their development and option, systems and equipment. As well as outlining developments, each article seeks to explain why progress was in a particular direction, emphasizing the political, strategic or economic factors that dictated that development. Moving from the general to the specific, graphs and tabular data relating to typical or significant aircraft or allied subjects are provided in each section. The series concentrates on the development of aircraft from the viewpoint of their technical development, the effect of technical development on the use of aircraft, and the effect of their usage on technical development. The images are roughly 10 x 7 cms [ a couple of aeroplanes in flight have been cut down to circles, 6cms. and 2cms. diameter], the early ones of Hucks are albumen prints and rather faded, the others are in better condition, all pasted into an album, now dilapidated and loose. *BENTFIELD CHARLES HUCKS, born Bentfield Essex, 1884, died of pneumonia in 1918. He obtained his Royal Aero Club certificate (number 91) in May, 1911, flying a Blackburn monoplane, joined the Royal Flying Corps in August, 1914, and was sent to the Western Front. An attack of pleurisy sent him back to England where he continued his flying as a test pilot at Hendon, north-west London. He tested various different types of aeroplanes, was credited with many feats of flying and was the first Briton to perform the loop, flying upside-down in his Bleriot monoplane in September 1913. In February of that year, he had been hired by the Robert Sinclair Tobacco Co. to make the first aerial delivery of their tobacco in special souvenir tins from Newcastle to the surrounding areas. He was also the inventor of the Hucks starter-truck, a device to replace hand spinning of the propellers of the early aeroplanes.
