First edition thus. Inscribed by the author's brother, 'Herbert S. Clarke, with the the kind regards of Sumner Jones. Nov. 1883.' Barry Humphries' copy, with his bookplate. Pasted to the verso of the preliminary blank is a contemporary photograph of a young, suited gentleman, in profile, eyes shut in apparent sleep, a book held in his lap. Spine slightly cocked, spine label browned and chipped, front hinge cracked, endpapers browned, else a good copy. Born into a strictly Calvinist home, Ebenezer Jones found relief in the Brontë-esque imaginative world that he created with his elder brother and sister. 'Sensitive, poetic, and finely endowed, the three children escaped into the trees around their house to read Scott's Waverley novels, Shelley's poetry, and Carlyle's French Revolution', wrote Richard Garnett, in the DNB. 'They dreamed of Lascar pirates and Chinese emperors and rebelled against their Calvinist catechism, until the death of their father impoverished the family and Jones became, at seventeen, a clerk in a City firm in Mincing Lane connected with the tea trade (a position he held for six years), working twelve hours a day and obliged to witness grossly dishonest practices.' The death of his sister and an unrequited love affair led him, as his brother put it, 'to throw the medley of his poems into the caldron of his ill-fated book'. Published in 1843, 'Studies of Sensation and Event' received praise from Browning and Swinburne but was otherwise met, Garnett noted, 'with the fate to be expected from anything so crude, so eccentric, and on a cursory inspection so ridiculous as a considerable portion of the book.' Reviewers mauled it into oblivion. An unfortunate marriage, the following year, added to Jones' despair. He destroyed all his unpublished poetry and took work as an accountant, before dying, in 1860, aged forty. It was not 1870, when Rossetti wrote about 'this remarkable poet, who affords nearly the most striking instance of neglected genius in our modern school of poetry', that interest in Jones developed a gradual momentum. 'I met him only once in my life,' Rossetti recalled, 'I believe in 1848, at which time he was about thirty, and would hardly talk on any subject but Chartism. His poems had been published some five years before my meeting him, and are full of vivid disorderly power.'. Signed by Author(s).…
