Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A school dialogue most likely composed in southeastern Germany in the early ninth century, the Disputatio puerorum offers a vivid and direct glimpse into the sort of instruction received by monastic novices and oblates in abbey schools of the Carolingian and Holy Roman Empires. Its question-and-answer format between students and master deploys an elementary Latin that would have consolidated linguistic skills at the same time as offering instruction on the nature of body and soul, the books of the Old and New Testaments, the Mass, and the Lord's Prayer. The text's intrinsic interest for historians of early medieval education is matched by its usefulness to modern students as a short course in what constituted basic cultural literacy in the monastic schoolrooms of the ninth through eleventh centuries, as drawn above all from the works of Isidore of Seville, but also from Augustine, Gregory the Great, Bede, and Alcuin. This volume is based on the A-recension of the Disputatio, Vienna, eOsterreichische Nationalbibliothek, 458. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. By the early thirteenth century, European Jewish life was firmly rooted in the directives and doctrines of the Babylonian Talmud. In 1236, however, an apostate named Nicholas Donin appeared at the court of Pope Gregory IX, claiming that the Talmud was harmful and thus intolerable in a Christian society. Pope Gregory sent Donin off throughout Europe in 1239 with a message to secular authorities and leading clergy: Donin's allegations were to be carefully investigated, and - if substantiated - the Talmud was to be destroyed. Only one European ruler acted on the papal injunction, the pious King Louis IX of France, who convened a trial of the Talmud in Paris. This unprecedented event is richly reflected in a variety of sources, both Christian and Jewish, here brought together in English translation for the first time. Bumping to the upper tip of the rear cover. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked. ~DD~ [2.0P] Translated into English for the first time by Richard Newhauser, this work is a translation of the Tractatus moralis de oculo, a late 13th-century 'bestseller' written by the scholar Peter of Limoges at the University of Paris. The book bridges two seemingly conflicting medieval topics: optical science and Christian pastoral care. Peter of Limoges took contemporary mathematical and physical discoveries regarding optics ? derived from ancient Greek and Arabic scientists ? and applied them metaphorically to moral theology, spiritual devotion, and ethics. Alongside the primary text, the 2012 volume includes an extensive introductory essay by Newhauser that details the life of Peter of Limoges, his intellectual circle, and the historical conflict between science and theology. It also includes comprehensive reference tools, specifically a detailed index of classical and medieval sources, an analogue index, and a bibliography. Contents: On the number of parts comprising the eye; On the order of the parts in the composition of the eye; On the number of types of vision; On the means of vision; On the organ in which vision is completed; On 13 extraordinary phenomena that are related to lessons concerning eyesight; On moral instruction according to twelve properties that have been ascertained in the corporeal eye; On seven distinctions of the eyes according to the distinction of the seven capital vices; On the costliness of the eyes in respect to other members of the human body; On suffering the loss of the corporeal e yes with equanimity; On the education of students based on the seven conditions that are required for sight; On the instruction of prelates based on seven properties of the eyes; On the four things spiritual eyes should contemplate continually; On three visible things that delight the corporeal eye; On the sevenfold eye of the divine gaze.

The principal signs and instruments of grace available to Christians as a result of Christ's redeeming work are the sacraments of the Church - baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, penance, extreme unction, holy orders, and marriage. These are the main subjects of Book 4 of the Sentences, comprising forty-two of its fifty Distinctions. In particular, penance and marriage (with regard to which the Lombard's consensual theory was to prove extremely influential) receive extensive discussion. The last eight Distinctions are given over to a treatment of the last things: the bodily resurrection, purgation, hell, the last judgement, and eternity. The Book concludes with a reference to a text of Isaias that serves as an allegory of the function and purpose of the Sentences as a whole.

Light bump to top of front board. ; Studies and Texts (Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies) , 24; 125 pages; With the Liber de novitatibus huius temporis (epistola ad Adrianum Papam) , Master Gerhoch (10931169) , provost of Reichersberg in Bavaria, attempted in 11551156 to inform Pope Hadrian IV (11541159) of the doctrinal novelties of his time the notorious abuses of both secular and ecclesiastical authorities, and the scandalous laxity among clergy and religious and to point out the remedies legislated by councils convoked by Innocent II(11301143) and Eugene III (11451153). The principal doctrinal innovators denounced by Gerhoch were Peter Abelard (d. 1141) and Gilbert, bishop of Poitiers (d. 1154). As early as 1126 Gerhoch debated with disciples of Abelard at the Roman curia; and, beginning in the fifties, Master Peter of Vienna, a disciple of Bishop Gilbert, antagonized Gerhoch a great deal. Gerhoch also tells Hadrian that clerical authorities not only keep armies but also abuse them by waging disorderly wars. Secular powers, on the other hand, recklessly usurp the goods of the Church for their own ends and fail to pay tithes imposed by Gregory I. In both France and Germany, the pope is told, the low moral conduct of the clergy calls for more stringent reform. Gerhoch advises the pope also to restrain loud-mouthed jurists in both secular and ecclesiastical courts since they often make their cases so convoluted that it becomes impossible to solve them. This edition of the Latin text is supplemented with a detailed introduction to the issues discussed, an extensive bibliography concerning Gerhoch, as well as indexes and a glossary.
