So often, books about number theory are written for people who have already mastered advanced mathematics and are now digging into the details of their specialties, or looking to branch out. "The Book of Numb…ers," on the other hand, is written to spread the joy of number patterns and the history of mathematics and numbers to people who are just starting to be intrigued. There are sections on how people came up with the words they use for numbers in the past and how they became the words we use now, and sections on why numerals look the way they do. That's to ease us into chapters on more advanced topics, like how we can solve math and algebra problems using geometry, and families of numbers. Luckily, the authorsJohn H. Conway and Richard K. Guyknow their audience, and use lots and lots of illustrations and even games to help readers with the concepts they write about. Our copy is a first edition, published in 1996, and appears to have never been read. The interior and the dust jacket are in flawless condition. The book is quarter-bound with black book cloth along the spine and over part of the boards and dark green binding paper covering the rest. There are a few very minor flaws along the line where the cloth meets the paper that appear to have come from the binding process. There is also a slight dent at the top front where the front cover meets the spine. These are only noticeable under close inspection, however. Photos are forthcoming or available upon request.
