Er wendet sich gegen neuere Versuche (besonders der Lefèvre-Schule), Plautus als einen vielfach völlig selbständig arbeitenden Dichter zu verstehen. Bei seiner Untersuchung der plautinischen Texte stützt sich Z. vor allem auf eine hervorragende Kenntnis der Überlieferungsvorgänge und der Besonderheiten der plautinischen Sprache; er versucht abeer auch strukturelle und metrische Gegebenheiten für siene Analysen auszunützen. Zwierlein schlägt mit seinen 'Studien' einen nicht ganz neuen, mit derartiger Bestimmtheit aber wohl noch nicht gegangenen Weg ein. Im einzelnen wird man über seine Ergebnisse gewiß geteilter Meinung sein und sein Bild von 'Plautus prugatus' vielleicht übertrieben finden. Jedenfalls gibt Zwierlein mit seinen Analysen der Forschung einen kräftigen Impuls bei ihren Versuchen die 'ipsissima Plauti verba' zu identifizieren und im weiteren auch die Strukturen der greichischen Vorbilder zu erschließen.'
