First Edition
Hardcover. engravings by T. R. Williams (illustrator). 1st edition. [5], 88 p.; 22 cm. A prose-poem, browsing by allusion rather than direct exposition through the synoptic gospels `Returning to the city next morning, the disciples saw a figtree he had cursed the day before; he had been hungry and it had offered him no fruit; now it was withered to its roots. But it had not been due to produce figs till June and it was still April! St Luke, though he read it in St Mark, omits this story of his unkindness to a helpless tree, while in St Matthew there is a different version. Clearly a parable has given rise to a miracle, the parable of the Barren Figtree. In the Old Testament Israel is represented as a figtree: "I saw your fathers as the first fruit on a figtree in her first season." He kept the picture in the parable, a figtree planted in a vineyard as an object of special cult and care. Yet it was bearing no fruit. The landlord ordered the vine-dresser to cut it down, but he pleaded that it might be spared for another season in the hope that it might yet produce fruit, and that was granted. This parable, in which he spoke of his mission as a figtree, he had told in a synagogue in Galilee. If he remembered it, he would reflect that months had passed without the fig tree showing much promise of fruit. But there was still hope. The next two days in Jerusalem, his last on earth, might be the figtree's June.' (p. 62, with references to Mk 11.12f, Mt 21.19f, Hos 9.10, Lk 13.6f given in the margin) VG orig. blue cloth in vg peach dj.
