Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 160 pages. Published in 2012. Artist Book. Collection of Robert Walser's writings interspersed with interpretative contemporary art. One of the most beautiful literary and art books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and shoul…d not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the 2013 Reissued Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents "A Little Ramble: In The Spirit of Robert Walser". A landmark "homage" project initiated by the legendary New York gallerist Donald Young, who died in 2012, during its realization, and to whom the book is dedicated. The production values are exemplary in every respect. "I saw in Walser an exemplary figure through whom connections between art and literature could be discussed anew" (Donald Young). So he invited a group of artists to respond to Walser's writings. "The artists have chosen stories by Robert Walser as well as excerpts from 'The Walk' and conversations with the writer recorded by his guardian Carl Seelig. Much of the material appears in English for the very first time. Preface by Donald Young. Afterword by Lynne Cooke" (Publisher's blurb). "If Walser had a hundred thousand readers, the world would be a better place" (Hermann Hesse). "One of the most important German-language writers of this century. A truly wonderful, heartbreaking writer" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Walser and contemporary art collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the 2012 First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online are subsequent printings of the 2013 Reissued Edition or have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. 50 color plates. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERT WALSER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0811220990. no.

Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Publication: London, Nuttall, Fisher, and Dixon, n.d. [c. 1800â"1815] Formatting: 8vo, pagination unverified, untrimmed text block. Condition Report: Good. The volume has been sensibly but plainly rebound in grey-blue paper over boards, presenting a tight, secure structure devoid of external embellish…ment. The text block remains entirely untrimmed, preserving its original rough-cut edges which display expected age-toning and moderate dust-soiling. Internally, the binding holds firm, though the preliminary leaves, including the frontispiece and title page, exhibit significant damp staining and prominent tide marks primarily localised to the lower gutter and margins. Intermittent foxing and scattered spotting are present throughout the text block, commensurate with the paper stock and provincial production of this era, yet the structural integrity remains uncompromised and the text is fully legible. Catalogue Note: This "Stereotype Edition" compiles Edward Youngâs profoundly influential blank-verse meditation alongside Robert Blairâs The Grave and supplementary verses, effectively gathering the period's most popular "Graveyard School" poetry into a single, accessible volume. The text is accompanied by an engraved frontispiece portrait of Young and several internal engraved plates executed by notable period craftsmen (including Neagle, Cooke, and J. Palmer), representing a solid example of nineteenth-century provincial illustration. The copy bears modest but interesting provenance markers, including early ownership signatures ("J. Burman" and what appears to be "John Forster") on the preliminary leaves. Having been rebound functionally in plain paper boards, the book stands as an authentic, unsophisticated survival of a heavily read printing. Such stereotyped editions, while historically printed in enormous numbers to satisfy the sweeping middle-class appetite for pietistic literature, are surprisingly scarce on the open market today in any condition, as they were overwhelmingly read to pieces rather than preserved in formal libraries. A quintessential cornerstone of the eighteenth-century "Graveyard School" of poetry, Edward Young's Night Thoughts was a spectacular literary success that defined the mood of Christian melancholia for generations. Written in profound grief following a succession of personal losses, this expansive blank-verse epic explores the transient nature of life, the inevitability of death, and the hope of immortality. This compilation also features Robert Blair's similarly influential poem The Grave, alongside other contemporary elegiac works, offering a comprehensive immersion into the era's fascination with mortality, mourning, and spiritual redemption. W.M. Craig; Cooke; Neagle; J. Palmer; J. James; J. Dudley; J. Taylor (illustrator).
