Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The Second Supplement to the First Edition of the History of British Fishes is a comprehensive book written by William Yarrell in 1860. The book is a continuation of Yarrell's earlier work, which was first published in 1836. It provides a detailed account of the fish species found in the wa…ters around the British Isles, including their physical characteristics, habitats, and behaviors. The book is divided into several sections, each of which covers a different group of fish. These include flatfish, round fish, cartilaginous fish, and shellfish. Each section provides detailed descriptions of the different species within that group, along with illustrations and diagrams to help readers identify them. In addition to its scientific content, the book also includes historical and cultural information about the fishing industry in Britain. Yarrell discusses the different methods of fishing used in the past and present, as well as the various ways in which fish have been used for food, medicine, and other purposes throughout history. Overall, the Second Supplement to the First Edition of the History of British Fishes is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the marine life of the British Isles. Its detailed descriptions, illustrations, and historical context make it a fascinating read for both scientists and laypeople alike. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good-. Third Edition. 1859. Third edition in two volumes. With a little loss - detailed below. xxxviii, 675pp. and a frontispiece portrait of the author in volume 1, iii, 670pp. in volume 2, and a total of 522 in-text wood engravings between the two volumes. William Yarrell (1784-1856) was an English zo…ologist, prolific writer, bookseller and naturalist admired by his contemporaries for his precise scientific work. A History of British Fishes is one of his best known works, originally serialised in nineteen parts from 1835, and then published bound in two volumes in 1836. It is a handbook or field guide systematically describing every type of fish found in the British Isles, with an article for each species. This third edition, published posthumously, has been edited by explorer and naturalist Sir John Richardson and includes a Memoir of William Yarrell. The books are near-uniformly bound in dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine (the cloth on volume 2 is slightly different and may be a well matched recasing). The cases of the books are in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and a little light staining on the boards and some light stains on the spines. The boards of volume 2 have patchy brown damp marking, most noticeably on the rear board. The spines of both volumes are bumped with some 1/8" to 1/4" splits in the cloth at the spine ends of volume 1. The contents are tight and clean with (NB) the last page of volume 1 (page 675) missing a large part from around the top corner that has taken part of two lines of text and part of an illustration. This page also has some damage and a hole near the middle of the spine edge. The last page of volume 2 has a tear near the top of the spine edge. There is no inscription in either volume. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy set weighing over 2.1 Kg. and extra postage will apply.
