Wright (1871-1959) received his B.S. degree from the University of California in civil engineering in 1893. The manuscript of Wright's undergraduate thesis at the University of Californi…a. Wright graduated in 1893 with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. "Wright was a skillful designer of astronomical equipment, which he used to photograph the spectra of stars and nebulae. He was also the first to use six-color photography in studying the planet Mars" (D.S.B. 14: 521). Wright spent most of his career at the Lick Observatory. "William Hammond Wright was an outstanding observational astronomer. During his long professional career he developed many new instruments and methods of observation, and he applied them skillfully toward the solution of crucial astronomical problems. Observational astronomers of Wright's ingenuity, skill, and enthusiasm are rare indeed. He and his work will long be remembered" (C. D. Shane, Obituary, in Year Book of the American Philosophical Society, 1959, pp. 150-53).
