Blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, slightest bumping to corners else a bright collectable copy. Volume I in the Northwest Historical Series. John Work joined the HBC in 1814 and eventually became Chief Factor. In 1849 he settled at his farm near Fort Victoria, where he died in 1861. In 1858, Work continued as a Chief Factor at HBC while his partner, James Douglas, left the firm to assume the governorship of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. At the time, Work was the largest private landowner on Vancouver Island, with some 1,800 acres under his belt. If proof of his dedication to HBC were needed, one could look no further than the HBC men who became his sons-in-law, including William Fraser Tolmie, Work is buried in what is now Pioneer Square, next to Christ Church Cathedral, in downtown Victoria, BC.
