The first section of the book gives an overview of the Fur Trade in the Northwest and the competition between the rival fur companies. Work's journal in presented next. His trapping expedition started in 1831 and ended the following year. They traveled through Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. The party faced numerous hardships, lack of food, a harsh winter, weak horses, harassment and attacks from the Blackfeet. Very good reading! see Howes W675. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 209, bibliography, index. Top edges gilt. Frontispiece, 4 illustrations, color map. Blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, slightest bumping to corners else a bright collectable copy. Volume I in the Northwest Historical Series. John Work joined the HBC in 1814 and eventually became Chief Factor. In 1849 he settled at his farm near Fort Victoria, where he died in 1861. In 1858, Work continued as a Chief Factor at HBC while his partner, James Douglas, left the firm to assume the governorship of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. At the time, Work was the largest private landowner on Vancouver Island, with some 1,800 acres under his belt. If proof of his dedication to HBC were needed, one could look no further than the HBC men who became his sons-in-law, including William Fraser Tolmie, Work is buried in what is now Pioneer Square, next to Christ Church Cathedral, in downtown Victoria, BC.
