Ölbild auf Leinwand, Bildgröße ca. 21,5 x 26,5 cm, in pastoser Technik von geschulter Hand gemalt, vom Künstler rechts unten eigenhändig signiert "H.P", alt mit Heftzwecken auf einen massiven Holzrahmen gespannt, aber nicht gerahmt, im Bildrand Spuren einer ehemaligen Rahmung, ansonsten gut erhalten 1100 gr.

Kl.-8°. 17 SS. OBrosch. (wenig stockfleckig). Leichte Alters-, kaum Gebrauchsspuren. Gesamthaft weitestgehend sauberes und gutes Exemplar. Anderweitig ist diese offenbar zu einem Stein des öffentlichen Anstosses gewordene ?Kapuzinerpredigt? nicht nachweisbar. ? Seit 1674 bestand in Näfels ein Kapuzinerkloster (vgl. HLS, Lemma Kapuziner, und P. M. Künzle, Die schweizerische Kapuzinerprovinz, 1928 passim). Anscheinend betreuten Patres von dort aus Kirchen in der Umgebung, so auch das ca. 10 km entfernte Schänis im Kanton St. Gallen. ? ?Den 20. Januar, am Feste des hl. Sebastianus, Kirchenpatron von Schänis, hatte ich die Ehre, die Festpredigt zu halten. Die Zeit, in welcher der hl. Sebastian lebte und wirkte, gab mir Anlass, über den Kampf zwischen dem positiven Christenthum und dem Unglauben oder Rationalismus zu sprechen, und ich glaubte angesichts der neuesten Ereignisse dazu berechtiget zu sein. Ich predigte allerdings mit Begeisterung, wie es das Volk gerne sieht, aber von Wuthausbruch, dessen mich die Tit. Kirchenverwaltung von Schänis beschuldiget, weiss ich nichts, und wer den P. Guardian von Näfels kennt, weiss, dass er dessen nicht einmal fähig ist. Auch in Schänis war ich nicht von Wuth beseelt, predigte nicht gegen Freisinnige und Andersgläubige, sondern nur im allgemeinen ohne irgend eine Konfession zu nennen von den Feinden der kath. Kirche als Trägerin des positiven Christenthums. Dennoch fand sich der Tit. Kirchenverwaltungsrath von Schänis bemüssiget, mich bei meiner [wohl: klösterlichen] Familie in einem geharnischten Schreiben des Kanzelmissbrauches und als Fanatiker, der Hass und Parteileidenschaft gegen Andersgesinnte schüre und auf die Spitze treibe, zu verklagen; dass somit meine pastorelle Aushülfe nicht mehr nachgesucht werden und das Betreten der Kanzel von Schänis mir untersagt sein soll. Woher der Tit. Kirchenrath von Schänis das Recht nimmt, einem vom Hochw. Bischofe der Diöcese approbirten und bevollmächtigten Priester zu verbieten die Kanzel von Schänis zu besteigen, weiss ich nicht, ich denke von dem jetzt beliebten Rechtsgrundsatz: Recht ist, was ich zum Recht mache. Diesen Anklagen gegenüber weiss ich nichts Besseres zu thun, als das Corpus delicti, meine Predigt der Oeffentlichkeit zu übergeben. Ich habe sie zwar nicht zur Veröffentlichung durch die Presse niedergeschrieben, sonst würde ich sie besser und stylgerechter ausgearbeitet haben.? (p. 3 f.). ? Die Predigt nahm übrigens im herrschenden Rahmen des Kulturkampfs und auch in Bezug auf den Vorwurf des Ultramontanismus durchaus aktuelle Themen wie z.B. Aspekte des Ersten Vatikanischen Konzils (Vaticanum I) auf, so u.a. das Unfehlbarkeitsdogma und die Bildung der Christ- oder Altkatholischen Gemeinde, und das in apologetischer Weise, was liberaleren Zeitgenossen wenig behagt haben dürfte. Es liegt hier somit ein schönes Beispiel einer veritablen modernen ?Kapuzinerpredigt? vor. Der unbeugsame Guardian, Pater Honorius, dessen Familiennamen nicht erscheint, ist leider nicht näher eruierbar (nicht bei Künzle, op. cit.). Sprache: de.
