Des motifs profanes et humoristiques, très souvent animaliers, se multiplient à l¿extérieur du texte et de son illustration. Leur présentation se codifie vers 1250 dans les ateliers parisiens, alors centraux de la production du livre universitaire, en épousant une mise en page solidement organisée à partir des lettrines initiales. Ce décor est aussitôt adopté dans les villes du nord de la France et dans les Flandres, ainsi que dans l¿Angleterre de l¿est. Vers 1300, il se répand dans le sud de la France, en Espagne, en Allemagne et en Italie. Mais, dès le milieu du XIVe siècle, la prolifération des feuillages supplante les drôleries animales ou humaines. Bien que connaissant des résurgences successives jusqu¿à la Renaissance, le genre est passé de mode. Jean Wirth et son équipe de recherche discutent les interprétations existantes et proposent une méthode iconologique adaptée au sujet. Les Marges à drôleries des manuscrits gothiques font l¿histoire de la constitution et de l¿évolution stylistique du genre, puis de ses principaux ingrédients constitutifs. On montre successivement ce qu¿il doit à l¿enluminure romane, à l¿iconographie de la Bible et du psautier, à l¿imitation d¿oeuvres d¿art antiques et enfin à la littérature profane.
