Hans Winterberg's four string quartets were composed over a period of four decades between 1936 and 1961 and reflect the four stages of his eventful biography. He composed the first in what were probably the happiest moments of his life in his native city of P…rague, the second under great hardship in the terrible war year of 1942, the third in 1957 during a phase of great compositional success in his adopted home of Munich, and the fourth in another dramatic phase of his life. It came at a moment of renewed doubt and uncertainty, when a young generation of composers in Europe was vehemently asserting itself, breaking with all traditions because it considered them obsolete and corrupted by fascism. Winterberg, a survivor of the Shoah, did not break with the past, but rather tried to continue the Czech-German-Jewish cultural symbiosis in his compositions after the war. The fourth quartet marks the beginning of a new creative phase in which he succeeded in combining the very different influences that shaped him - the Bohemian-Moravian, folk-inspired tradition as a successor of Janacek and the achievements of the Second Viennese School, imparted byhis teacher Alexander Zemlinsky - into a homogeneous, rhythmically pointed and expressive style. Until recently, the wind quintet from 1957 published here for the first time seemed to be the only work in this formation in Hans Winterberg's (1901-1991) extensive catalog of chamber music gems. In the meantime, another piece in the traditional scoring for fl…ute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon has been rediscovered in his estate, a suite from 1946, written in Prague one year after the composer's liberation from the Theresienstadt concentration camp and one year before his emigration to Munich. Winterberg, a pianist by training, studied, like Hans Krasa, with the respected Prague piano teacher Therese Wallerstein composed just as passionately for string instruments as for woodwind and brass and experimented with the most diverse and sometimes most surprising formations. What is surprising about the Quintet from 1957 is the vehemence with which the composer lived out his Czech-Austrian-German multiple identities in his compositions, as if the work was a commentary on his complex and dramatic life story: When in all three movements the German children's song "Es klappert die Muhle am rauschenden Bach" is heard in a decidedly Bohemian-Moravian, post-Janacek environment, then this can certainly also be interpreted as an ironic nod of the composer, who in the precarious post-war years had to consider whether he was spending his money on bread and butter or on music paper. Hans Winterberg (1901-1991) composed his first work for the classical formation of the wind quintet (with secondary instruments) at the beginning of 1946 in Prague. After a Suite for trumpet and piano composed at the end of 1945, this was his second work writ…ten after the liberation from the Theresienstadt concentration camp in June 1945. This musical, exuberant piece shows no sign of what its author had gone through in the previous five years. The character is light, airy and free from the darkness of the works composed during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and some further pieces written after the emigration to Germany in 1947. The movements are magnificent and full of ideas and rhythmic figures that develop into ostinato foundations in the tradition of Janacek. The ingenuity and variety of mood changes that accompany each unpredictable change of meter are masterful. The Suite was only recently rediscovered in the composer's estate and is still awaiting its premiere at the time of the release of this publication. Born in Prague in 1901, Hans, or rather Hanus Winterberg, had found his style around the mid-1930s, to which he would remain faithful until the end of his life, representing a unique but not untypical symbiosis of different influences for Czech modernism: the… Second Viennese School, mediated by his teacher Alexander Zemlinsky, French Impressionism and, becoming more and more prominent over time, the folk-inspired, rhythmically dominated music of Leos Janacek. Winterberg did not have much time to build a career, because from March 1939 at the latest, after the annexation of the so-called "Resttschechechei" by Nazi Germany, he, as a Jew, was forbidden any professional activity. Exploited as a forced laborer from 1941, he probably only escaped deportation to Theresienstadt and death in Auschwitz through the protection of his marriage to the respected Sudeten German pianist Maria Maschat. The handwriting of the few compositions written during the war bears witness to the existential hardship in which they were written, but also to the immense spiritual resistance of their creator. The Suite for clarinet and piano from 1944, published here for the first time, is not only a substantial contribution to the clarinet literature, but also a unique document of artistic self-assertion. The first, composed in happy times in Prague in 1936, had to wait until 2024 for its premiere. The second was composed under dramatic circumstanc…es in the war year 1942, when Winterberg, by a twist of fate, was not deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp like his colleagues Viktor Ullmann, Pavel Haas, Hans Krasa and Gideon Klein, thus surviving the Shoah. The third, like all his other works not published during his lifetime, was composed in 1957, at another existentially difficult time after his great success as a composer in Munich in the early 1950s, where he had fled shortly before the Communists seized power in Czechoslovakia in 1947. Due to its enormous interpretative challenges, it was not until 1970 that Winterberg found an ensemble in the legendary Sonnleitner Quartet - members of the Munich Philharmonic - that could do justice to the technical and emotional demands of the work. This first edition of the second string quartet documents both versions of the quartet: the original from 1957 and the second with the retouching that the composer made after the failure of the first performance in 1969 by the concertmaster quartet of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. In diesem Jahr wurde seine Mutter in einem NS-Vernichtungslager in der Ukraine ermordet,… Winterberg selbst von seiner Frau und Tochter getrennt und in ein 'Judenhaus' umgesiedelt. Dass er Zwangsarbeit leisten musste und nicht, wie fast alle übrigen Repräsentanten der jüdischen Kulturelite des Landes, nach Theresienstadt deportiert wurde, rettete ihm das Leben. Winterberg emigrierte 1947 nach München und konnte relativ schnell im dortigen Musikleben Fuß fassen. Durch enge Kontakte zu den Münchner Philharmonikern fand das 2. Streichquartett ins Repertoire des Koeckert-Quartetts, das es am 15. Januar 1951 in München uraufführte. Das hochexpressive, komplexe Werk ist nicht nur ein klingendes Tagebuch aus einer Zeit des Schreckens und der Ungewissheit - es ist vor allem ein zutiefst bewegendes Dokument künstlerischen Schaffens als Ausdruck geistigen Widerstands gegen die Entmenschlichung.Schwierigkeitsgrad: 4-5 44 pp. Englisch, Deutsch.

Streichquartett ins Repertoire des Koeckert-Quartetts, das es am 15. Januar 1951 in München uraufführte. Until recently, the wind quintet from 1957 published here for the first time seemed to be the only work in this formation in Hans Winterberg's (1901-1991) extensive catalog of chamber music gems. In the meantime, another piece in the traditional scoring for…flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon has been rediscovered in his estate, a suite from 1946, written in Prague one year after the composer's liberation from the Theresienstadt concentration camp and one year before his emigration to Munich. Winterberg, a pianist by training, studied, like Hans Krasa, with the respected Prague piano teacher Therese Wallerstein composed just as passionately for string instruments as for woodwind and brass and experimented with the most diverse and sometimes most surprising formations. What is surprising about the Quintet from 1957 is the vehemence with which the composer lived out his Czech-Austrian-German multiple identities in his compositions, as if the work was a commentary on his complex and dramatic life story: When in all three movements the German children's song 'Es klappert die Muhle am rauschenden Bach' is heard in a decidedly Bohemian-Moravian, post-Janacek environment, then this can certainly also be interpreted as an ironic nod of the composer, who in the precarious post-war years had to consider whether he was spending his money on bread and butter or on music paper.

This musical, exuberant piece shows no sign of what its author had gone through in the previous five years. The character is light, airy and free from the darkness of the works composed during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and some further pieces written after the emigration to Germany in 1947. The movements are magnificent and full of ideas and rhythmic figures that develop into ostinato foundations in the tradition of Janacek. The ingenuity and variety of mood changes that accompany each unpredictable change of meter are masterful. The Suite was only recently rediscovered in the composer's estate and is still awaiting its premiere at the time of the release of this publication. 44 pp. Englisch, Deutsch.
