The very rare first issue landmark Colorado newspaper, the first published in the South Park region, inscribed on the front page with a brief pencil note from proprietor, William N. Byers. Byers (1831-1901) was no stranger to pioneering publications in 1859, he earned himself a permanent place in Western history by establishing the Rocky Mountain News of Denver, the first newspaper printed in Colorado. He also became the territory's first postmaster after championing the creation of the Denver post office, primarily to supply stories for his paper. A tireless promoter of the Colorado territory, the short-lived weekly Miners' Record represented yet another of his attempts to tout the territory's virtues, this time among the mines of the South Park grassland. First published at the "Tarryall Mines" on July 4, 1861, Byers describes the purpose of the Miners' Record as follows: "In a word we desire to make the Miners Record the miners best friend, a channel by which he can learn all the stiring [sic] and interesting news of the world at large, and which will at the same time convey to his friends in the states or elsewhere, the incidents, events and results of his life and his labors in the very heart of the Rocky Mountains." This first issue of the paper prints the newly-passed Colorado Organic Act in full, and focuses largely on Civil War news and discussion of the upcoming elections for the Territory's first government. Describing themselves as "heart and hand for the restoration and preservation of the Union," the editors push for a candidate who is "an unequivocal and undoubted supporter" of the Lincoln administration. News from the front is primarily concerned with Nathaniel Lyon's victory at Boonville, Missouri and secessionist Governor Claiborne Jackson's flight to Arkansas, though rumors also abound of New Mexico and Arizona's allegiances. Local interest stories include reports of Mormon migrants, the announcement and advertisement of new business in the area, mining reports from the Tarryall, Buckskin Joe, and Fairplay diggings, the proceedings of Miners' Meetings at Tarryall and Fairplay, and of course solicitations for stories and subscriptions. While McMurtrie suggests that the Miners' Record was "probably printed at Denver, in the office of the Rocky Mountain News," the text of the issue (which describes the location and construction of the Record office) and a contemporary pencil note from Byers himself point towards a genuine South Park imprint. Byers' note on this copy reads in full: "First paper printed in the South Park at Tarryall City July 3rd 1861 at 6pm, first job done July 2 at 9am, Wm N. Byers." Regardless of where it was printed, the Miners' Record only ran for eleven issues before closing its doors on September 14, no longer worth the cost of operations now that the first territorial elections had been decided. OCLC and McMurtrie each give only one location for the Miners' Record, that being a full run of the paper at the Colorado Historical Society. We locate no issues at auction. A remarkably rare and noteworthy early Colorado imprint, inscribed by its famous proprietor. McMURTRIE (COLORADO), p.74, 283. Large folio newspaper. Old folds, light soiling, a few small holes at cross-folds. Contemporary pencil inscription by William N. Byers in upper margin of front page. Very good.…
