Add to basketSOFTCOVER. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Foolscap quarto size (4to) in stiff card covers. 20pp text plus frontispiece, 4pp plates and 3 leaf folding plan and elevation at rear. The plates show 7 views of models for Holford's proposals for the regeneration of Piccadilly Circus which are largely archetypal late 50's modernist in s…tyle, but with some very futurist features including a 'Vertical Feature' (sic) multi-storey tower, fountain cum ice rink, and a hotel with roof design reminiscent of Robert Matthew's Commonwealth Insitute. Perhaps fortunately none of his building proposals went any further than the drawing board, but his plans for the partial pedestrianisation and street layout closely resemble the actual redevelopment carried out in the early 1990's . Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Third Edition. Publication: London, Printed for W. Holford, by J. Hart, [n.d.] Formatting: Oblong 8vo, unpaginated. Condition Report: Good. The book is presented in its original half-calf leather binding over marbled boards. The binding remains remarkably tight and structurally sound, a testament to i…ts period construction, though the exterior exhibits expected wear typical with its age and use. The extremities are rubbed, with bumping to the corners that has exposed the underlying boards, and the marbled paper is scuffed with some surface loss. The leather spine is heavily rubbed along the joints and at the head and tail, yet it successfully retains its structural integrity and blind-stamped banding. Internally, the pages are generally bright and clean, showing mild, scattered foxing that is primarily confined to the preliminaries and endpapers, without compromising the clarity of the musical notation. Catalogue Note: This is the Third Edition of the Supplement to the Voce Di Melodia, compiled and arranged by William Holford. It was issued to accompany his seminal hymnal, Voce Di Melodia (first published circa 1834), which is historically significant for featuring the tune 'Comfort,' the melody now globally recognised as the beloved Christmas carol 'Joy to the World'. Printed in London by J. Hart for W. Holford, this oblong volume features a notable provenance marker: an embossed blind stamp on the title page belonging to J. Holford of Manchester, one of the provincial music-sellers explicitly listed in the imprint. While the title page is undated, the dedication to John Bird Sumner as the Lord Bishop of Chester places publication firmly between 1828 and 1848, prior to his elevation to Archbishop of Canterbury. This specific supplement edition is exceptionally scarce on the open market, with institutional holdings also appearing to be remarkably sparse, making it a compelling artefact of regional nineteenth-century English psalmody. Blurb: A fascinating artefact of nineteenth-century English hymnody, William Holfordâs Supplement to the Voce Di Melodia offers a captivating glimpse into the congregational music of the era. Holford's main work, Voce di Melodia, is historically renowned for cementing the melody now globally sung as "Joy to the World." This exceptionally rare third edition of the supplement expands upon that musical legacy with an array of double and single chants, alongside select sacred pieces arranged for four voices and an accompaniment for the organ or piano-forte. An essential and elusive volume for musicologists, historians of English church music, and discerning collectors of rare antiquarian hymnals. N/A (illustrator).
