Condition: Gut. 2*, 208 Seiten, mit dem Bildnis des Verfassers, Wilhelm Emanuel Backhaus (1828-1896) besuchte in Petershagen die Bürgerschule und erhielt bis 1843 Unterricht durch Privatlehrer. Seinen Wunsch, ein Studium anzuschließen, konnte er nicht verwirklichen. Er wurde, dem Willen seines Vaters folgend, Großhandelskaufmann. Nach einjährigem Militärdienst ging er einer vielseitigen kaufmännischen Tätigkeit in binnenländischen und überseeischen Geschäften nach. 1846 ließ er sich in Bremen nieder, wo er 1854 ein eigenes Handelsunternehmen gründete. Von 1854 bis 1866 war er Mitglied der gesetzgebenden Körperschaft in Bremen, widmete sich aber in seinem letzten Jahrzehnt nur noch schriftstellerischen Arbeiten, vor allem sozialpolitischen, kunst- und allgemeinphilosophischen Inhalts. (ADB) Als Gegner des politischen und wirtschaftlichen Liberalismus gab er von 1859 bis 1864 im Auftrag der Bremer Gewerbekammer die gewerblich-industrielle Zeitschrift Norddeutsche Hanse heraus. (s.
