Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a captivating look at the world of shooting and fishing in the late 19th century. The author, a self-proclaimed enthusiast, takes the reader on a series of thrilling excursions across England, France, Alsace, Belgium, Holland, and Bavaria. With vivid detail, he recount…s his experiences, from rabbiting in Derbyshire to wildfowl shooting along the Lincolnshire coast, providing insights into the practices and social dynamics of the era. The book is infused with a spirit of adventure and camaraderie, reflecting the author's passionate love for the outdoors and his desire to share his experiences with others. The text is replete with charming anecdotes and vivid descriptions of the landscapes and wildlife encountered, inviting the reader to immerse themselves in the world of the sportsman. The author also engages with the ethical debate surrounding shooting, arguing that the sport is both natural and necessary in a time when game was seen as a valuable source of food. He challenges the views of those who condemn shooting as cruel, offering a compelling counter-argument that highlights the importance of managing wildlife populations and the inherent connection between man and nature. The book stands as a fascinating testament to the changing relationship between humans and nature in a time of rapid industrialization and social transformation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Large octavo, 511pp., illustrated, with several folding plates, plus advertisements. A crisp, clean, very good copy, with some foxing to the first and last few leaves, and the book seemingly strengthened, with later endpapers. This seems to have been an unnecessary repair, as the b…ook is outwardly quite lovely and well-preserved, with no exterior restoration, and just a few nicks to the cloth. The original front flyleaf is laid-in, as it is SIGNED by Clements, the author, in pencil. We were unable to trace any signed copies at auction or in commerce. Rare thus.
