Being the experiences of an officer in France and England during the Great War. Sole edition. 12mo. Original printed cloth, spotted, rear board stained, front hinge splitting but holding fine, some pale marginal dampstaining not affecting text. viii, 80pp. Bombay, The Times Press, Wilberforce-Bell (1885-1956) has inscribed the half-title: "With the author's compliments and best wishes. Dharmsala. 11/11/16." In the preface, he explains the title as, in 1916, the names of regiments and places "might conceivably probe of value to the enemy" and thus were omitted. Nonetheless, he provides a vivid account of life in the trenches which is improved by his pithy, wry observations. Rare: OCLC locates copies at BL, Oxford. COPAC adds the IWM. .

Two letters dating April 3 and April 7, 1916 possibly from "D Hinsworth" in hospital 'Colata' (?) Hospital and addressed to 'Wilberforce Bell". The writer is recovering from an injury to his arm and looks forward to returning to Mesopotamia as soon as possible. He writes mostly of his return, his pay, and pay owed to his squire, who will return to his home in Princh (?). He asks that his saddle, camp bed and table be given to the care of Ogilvy when it appears that he will have to "go home to have my arm treated for 4 months - its rather badly scragged apprently the muscles want massage, etc." He includes a 4pp hand written description entitled "Resume of Operations" that describes casualties and his battalion's actions in and around Hanna, Sannah, Sheik Sa'ad, Dujaila Redoubt, Kut. His 'Battalion disembarked in Basra, . picked up Capt. Crookshank, reached Sheik Sa'ad. In previous weeks battles had been fought near Ali Gharbi and Sheikh Sa'ad. In both cases Turks had fought splendid rear guard action." It's possible the letter is addressed to Major Harold Wilberforce-Bell, of the Connaught Rangers, then the Foreign and Political Department of the government of India. His brother Reginald , of the 105th Canadian Fusiliers, was blown up by an enemy mine at Ypres in 1915 and died in England shortly afterward. It is said that the family were related to William Wilberforce, the abolitionist. 5 x 8", 8pp, attached with original pin.
