Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist nun 1) die Frage nach dem Alter und der Verfasserschaft derjenigen grammatischen Interpretationsgrundsätze", die Pänini im Unterschied zu den Interpretationsregeln" (paribbäfä-sütra) nicht ausdrücklich in seiner Astädhyäyi gelehrt hat, und 2) die Frage nach der eventuellen bewußten Anwendung dieser Grundsätze durch Pänini. Es wird darüber hinaus versucht, die Geschichte der Interpretation der Interpretationsgrundsätze" von Kätyäyana bis Nägojibhatta zu skizzieren und abschließend zu klären, ob diese paribhasas tatsächlich bei der Interpretation der Grammatik des Pänini angewendet werden müssen, bzw. können. Die große Zahl derartiger Interpretationsgrundsätze" und der Umfang des Materials zu jedem einzelnen von ihnen, schließen es aus, sämtliche paribbäfäs so eingehend zu untersuchen, wie es hier geschieht.
