Die bisweilen überbetonte Abgrenzung von Gestalttherapeuten gegenüber der Psychoanalyse wurde von manchen Psychoanalytikern mit Nichtbeachtung oder heftiger Kritik an der Gestalttherapie beantwortet. Im Zuge solcher Auseinandersetzungen kamen die Beschäftigung mit den Gemeinsamkeiten und der kollegiale Dialog zwischen beiden therapeutischen Richtungen zu kurz. Dabei ist ein allein auf die eigene Therapieschule begrenztes Denken heute nicht mehr zeitgemäß.
