Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book addresses the seemingly strange neglect in erecting a monument to George Washington, âthe Father of His Country,â for nearly 60 years after his death. The author argues that such a monument was not only a fitting tribute to Washington, but also a necessary symbol of American…national pride and gratitude. The book provides a detailed history of the efforts to build the Washington Monument, from its inception in 1833 to its completion in 1884. The author also discusses the various designs that were proposed for the monument, and the challenges that were faced in its construction. This book offers a unique perspective on the life and legacy of George Washington, and on the importance of public monuments in shaping our national identity. It will be of great interest to historians, architects, and anyone interested in the history of American culture and politics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is the First Annual Report of the Washington Monument Association of the First School District of Pennsylvania. It chronicles the first year of work by this group whose goal was to build a memorial to George Washington and whose work was especially timely as several efforts h…ad been made to construct such a monument and had failed. The report outlines how and why the association was formed, and discusses its activities, its setbacks, and its plans going forward, including obtaining the land on which to build the monument. This book illustrates the power and challenges faced by civic organizations in the mid-19th century, and it presents an important record of a project that aimed to honor one of America's most revered figures. The book illuminates the unique role of citizens' groups in history and serves as an important tool with which historians can provide a more accurate picture of the past. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. ".with an Appendix containing proceedings of the Society at the Inauguration Meeting of 22d March, 1859, etc., etc.," Washington. Geo. S. Gideon, printed. 1859 Softcover booklet, 31 pages. Printed wraps. 13 page address given by John Carroll Brent on May 17, 1859. Then several pages showing minu…tes of the meeting to organize the Society under charter. 4 pages, with James Buchanan, President of the United States and ex officio President of the Society listed as presiding. Then follows a 5 page reprint of the 1855 act of Congress to construct a memorial to Washington. Then in 3 pages, the Charter itself, defining the purpose and goals of the Society. A small rubberstamp on the last page in purple, "Toner Collection Duplicate." There is an embossed Toner Library emblem at the bottom of the title page. The first dozen pages (and cover) are well thumbed and have a small closed tear of two in the outer margin. The rest of the pages are cleaner and brighter. This remarkable and rare little publication offers a glimpse into the slow progress of construction of one of the most famous monument in the country. At the time of this publication, the Monument was only partially built, out of money & construction was about to stop completely because of the Civil War. In fact, the Monument would be partially taken down after the war because the construction of the 1850's was of too poor quality to continue building on top of. This booket has further interest in that is came originally from the Toner Library a famous nineteenth century collection of Washintoniana. Toner donated more than 500 books and pamphlets to the Library of Congress in 1891, but evidently kept this one. A doubly interesting piece of Washington history.
