Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Sound Your 'A', Ian C. Bentley, H. R. Douglas, Peter B. Gammond, John Taylor, G. W. L. Telfer, J. Irving Wardle â" 1st Edition Publication: London, The Fortune Press, [c. 1948] Formatting: Slim 8vo, unpaginated. Condition Report: Very Good. The binding is firm, tight, and remains reassuringly square, featuring clean, light blue cloth boards with sharp corners and bright red lettering to the spine, entirely free of shelf-wear or bumping. Internally, the text block is exceptionally bright, clean, and free of foxing or age-toning, with supple leaves and sound hinges. The original, unclipped dust jacket (retaining the 6s. price) shows moderate general age-toning, surface grubbiness, and light shelf-wear to the extremities, with very minor chipping and sunning to the spine ends, yet it remains whole and attractive in a protective archival sleeve. Catalogue Note: A scarce first edition anthology showcasing early work by a collective of young, mid-century British poets. The Fortune Press, overseen by the eccentric and somewhat notorious R. A. Caton, was highly influential in publishing emerging poetic voices during and immediately after the Second World War, famously launching Philip Larkinâs career alongside a host of contemporaries. The book features stylised line-drawn decorations by Peter B. Gammond, who also contributed four poems to the collection. This copy is notably enhanced by a contemporary presentation inscription on the front free endpaper from the lead contributor, Ian C. Bentley, who has signed his name and provided an evocative two-line quotation: "Take the step towards Eternity / Towards the heart of the Sun with me." Copies of this particular anthology are exceedingly scarce in commerce, with almost no exact comparables available on the open market, rendering this signed and quoted copy a significant find for collectors of Fortune Press imprints or mid-century English verse. A compelling, mid-century collection of original verse by six emerging poets, Ian C. Bentley, H. R. Douglas, Peter B. Gammond, John Taylor, G. W. L. Telfer, and J. Irving Wardle, published by London's legendary Fortune Press. Accompanied by striking surrealist line drawings,ÂSound Your 'A' captures the creative energy, melancholia, and experimental spirit of post-war British literary circles, providing a fascinating glimpse into an era defined by poetic renewal. Peter B. Gammond (illustrator).…

Add to basketwith 20 pencil-and-ink illustrations within the manuscript text, pp. [36], 4to, contemporary scarlet pebbled cloth, front board lettered in gilt, boards with roll-tooled gilt border, boards with a few marks and slightly rubbed edges, very good. Six comic skits and monologues, inscribed in full declamatory style, as they were performed in the late nineteenth century in a number of Nottingham institutions, illustrated with highly characterful caricatures. The most striking piece is the last, 'The Humours of a Country Fair', which includes the charabanc, Mr. Creepy's cart loaded with be-hatted pleasure-seekers on their way to the fair; 'the tallest Giant in the whole world. of such extraordinary proportions, that he can put is right leg in shrop shire & his left leg in Lankee shire!'; a Scotch Lion merrily munching an English bulldog; and the Wild Beast Show, featuring 'the Ryonocery from the deserts of Saarah ann! fed on Bamboo and macaroni!', the Larfing Hyena which 'cried in the night. like a human being in distress and then devours all wot goes to his assistances', and the ostrich who hides his head in the sand 'and because he can't see nobody, he thinks nobody can't see him!' The other sketches include the rhyme of Jack Robinson, illustrated with deserting sailors and a rowing boat, a burlesque on marriage, accompanied by detailed sketches of armchairs and cigar smoke, and a burlesque on the law with carefully drawn wigs and judicial expressions. Asylum entertainment, particularly comedy and music, had, by this stage, become an accepted part of treatment and institutional life for both the rich, and, in this case, the poor; Sneinton Asylum was the first county asylum in England, opening in 1811, financed by voluntary subscription and the local authority, and by the 1870s was home to the poorer inmates, the richer having migrated to the Coppice Hospital. (J.S. Alexander, Mapperley Hospital and George Thomas Hine, Warwick University, 2019) J.H. Wardle remains an elusive figure: a similar sketchbook is held by the National Library of Ireland; and it appears that a printed edition of this title was issued by the Shepherd Brothers, (Angel Row, the Market, Nottingham), in the 1880s - one copy appears in OCLC, held by Louisiana State University.…
