First Edition
Wrappers. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: None. First Edition. 8vo, light tan lettered wrappers, text with detailed commentary by Prof. Waltzing in his footnotes and frequent Latin parenthetical notes in his French textual translation, Index, viii, [ix-xii] + 357 pages. Tertullian, full name Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus, (c. 155 - c. 240 AD), was a prolific early Christian author from Carthage in the Roman province of Africa. Trained as a lawyer, he converted to Christianity in 192 and became a priest. This is his Apology [Lat.: Apologeticus], that is, his defence and polemic for Christianity. He was the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature. He also was an early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy, including contemporary Christian Gnosticism. Often acerbic, Tertullian has been called "the father of Latin Christianity" and "the founder of Western theology." Jean Pierre Waltzing (1857 - 1929) was a Belgian Latinist and professor at the University of Liège. He wrote several learned studies on Tertullian and Rome. Scholarly Edition of this great Apology for the Christian faith by the eloquent father Tertullian. This NF copy is immaculate, tight, unmarked, & very slightly and uniformly age-toned (as is often the case with French paper). Its only defect is a relatively clean 1" tear on the leading edge of its rear wrapper.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an in-depth analysis of the poetry of ancient Greek poet Bacchylides, situating the poet firmly within the literary landscape of his time. Bacchylides lived in the fifth century BCE, an important yet often overlooked figure between the towering giants Pindar and Simonides, and the author here examines Bacchylides' work as a continuation and expansion of the poetic tradition established by his predecessors. The book explores the influence of Homeric epics, the richness of Bacchylides' language, and the poet's unique examination of historical and mythological paradigms. Combining close readings of Bacchylides' odes with an exploration of their broader literary context, this book sheds new light on a significant but often neglected figure in classical poetry.
