Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book argues that public libraries are an essential component in the education, betterment, and democratization of any society. The author decries the fact that libraries are often overlooked or underfunded, urging the public to reconsider the true value of these institutions. The…text provides numerous examples of how libraries serve a diverse population, from scholars and students to children and immigrants, and how they offer services beyond the mere lending of books, such as educational lectures and technology access. The author further emphasizes the importance of promoting awareness of library resources, using publicity tactics that extend beyond the traditional methods of posters and newspaper advertisements. By advocating for increased support and visibility for public libraries, this book aims to ensure that these vital institutions continue to play a central role in fostering literacy, intellectual growth, and community engagement. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Published within a year of the death of Flight commander Ball this illustrated biography has a foreword from David Lloyd George and appreciations by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, Major General Sir Hugh Trenchard , Chief of the Air Staff and Brigadier General J.F.A. Higgins probably three of the most important people at the end of the war. Albert Ball, VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC (14 August 1896 - 7 May 1917) was an English fighter pilot during the First World War. At the time of his death he was the United Kingdom's leading flying ace, with 44 victories, and remained its fourth-highest scorer behind Edward Mannock, James McCudden, and George McElroy. Raised in Nottingham, Ball joined the Sherwood Foresters at the outbreak of the First World War and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in October 1914. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) the following year, and gained his pilot's wings on 26 January 1916. Joining No. 13 Squadron RFC in France, he flew reconnaissance missions before being posted in May to No. 11 Squadron, a fighter unit. From then until his return to England on leave in October, he accrued many aerial victories, earning three Distinguished Service Orders and the Military Cross. He was the first ace to become a British popular hero. Ref A4 6.
