Eastern National operated right across the county, Daimlers and Leylands acquired from Westcliff-on-Sea Motor Services in 1955 and Guy Arabs taken over with the Moore Bros business in 1963 adding variety to its fleet of Bristol-built buses. North Essex was a hive of independent activity, fleets such as those of Hedingham and District and Osborne's of Tollesbury containing many interesting second-hand buses. Eastern Counties operated from Suffolk into north Essex whilst an eclectic mixture of vehicles provided municipal services at Colchester and at Southend, where services were fully coordinated with Eastern National. London Transport and Green Line services intermixed with Eastern National services in south Essex, where extraordinary independent Super Coaches also ran some bus routes.Philip Wallis chronicles and illustrates the great variety of operators and buses to be found in Essex in the period before National Bus Company standardisation set in.…

Major companies Aldershot and District, Hants and Dorset, Southdown, Southern National, Thames Valley, Western National and Wilts and Dorset are all featured. Municipal operations at Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Southampton, including trolleybuses at Portsmouth until 1963 and Bournemouth until 1969, are well represented. Philip Wallis visited South and West Wales several times with his camera between 1961 and 1963 and captured on film a great variety of bus operators in that part of the country. Civic pride was strong and no less than seven municipal undertakings ran bus services in the coal-mining valleys of Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire, while capital city Cardiff and port town Newport each had their own large Corporation Transport Departments, with Cardiff maintaining the only Welsh trolleybus network at that time. Six British Electric Traction group companies operated in the area with fleet sizes ranging from the thirty-four vehicles of Neath & Cardiff Luxury Coaches to 674 buses and coaches with Western Welsh. British Transport Commission-controlled Red & White and United Welsh were significant in parts of the territory, adding variety by still running AEC, Albion, Guy and Leyland buses before sale to the BTC led to standardisation on Bristol buses. The tentacles of the mighty Crosville empire stretched down to Cardigan in far West Wales. Independent operation, using diverse new and second-hand buses, was strong across both industrial South Wales and rural West Wales.This book profiles many of the operators and illustrates their vehicles through 180 colour and monochrome images, mostly previously unpublished.
