Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First edition. A very scarce first edition of this brightly illustrated account of a violin by Stradivari. First edition. Very scarce work. Illustrated with three colour plates with tissue guards and a folding facsimile. Collated complete. An account of "The Tuscan Strad", a violin by Antonio Stradivari, an Italian luthier and a craftsman of string instruments such as violins, cellos, guitars, violas and harps. The precision with which he carved the heads and inserted the purfling quickly marked him as one of the most dexterous craftsmen in the world, a prime example of this being the 1690 "Tuscan" violin. At the time of writing the violin was in the possession of W. E. Hill & Sons, a British firm based in London that specialises in violins, string instruments and bows. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the extremities and endpapers. A contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…

hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Publication: London, W. E. Hill & Sons, 1889. Formatting: Small 4to, pp. 14. Condition Report: Very Good. The publisher's original green cloth binding remains firm and secure, with the stitched spine intact. The extremities show some moderate rubbing and subtle bumping to the corners, alongside general time-darkening and a few faint marks to the boards. However, the gilt titling and intricate interlocking ring device on the front board remain striking and relatively unoxidised. Internally, the book is quite sound. While the endpapers and preliminary leaves, including the title page, exhibit scattered foxing, the text block is otherwise generally clean. The chromolithograph frontispiece retains its vividness, unmarred by any significant blemishes. Catalogue Note: A scarce first edition of this important early monograph by W. E. Hill & Sons, the preeminent London violin dealers and experts of their era. Issued just a year after the firm acquired the famed 1690 'Tuscan' Stradivarius (originally made for Cosimo de' Medici), this publication marks a critical moment in the history of British violin expertise, paving the way for the Hills' subsequent monumental biographies of classical luthiers. The volume is beautifully illustrated with a colour frontispiece accurately depicting the rich varnish and elegant proportions of the Tuscan Strad. Copies of this 1889 first printing are remarkably scarce on the open market today, often being absorbed into institutional collections or held tightly by luthiers and violin enthusiasts. It stands as a pivotal piece of late 19th-century organological literature. An essential, historical study of one of the world's most celebrated instruments, The Tuscan Strad details the provenance and physical characteristics of Antonio Stradivari's 1690 masterpiece. Penned by the esteemed experts at W. E. Hill & Sons, this rare 1889 volume offers both a fascinating glimpse into the golden age of violin collecting and a highly accurate visual record of an instrument that continues to captivate luthiers and musicians alike. Alfred Slocombe (illustrator).…
