Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Geologist W. C. Mansfield's study of his collection of 100 species of New Miocene Gastropods and Scaphopods From Alaqua Creek Valley, Florida, many of them discovered for the first time. Biography: Wendell Clay Mansfield an American geologist and paleontologist, worked for the United States Geological Survey, specializing in the Cenozoic Era mollusks (mollusks from the Tertiary and Quaternary periods) of the southeastern United States, particularly Florida and the Atlantic Coastal Plain. His contributions include extensive publications, including numerous influential bulletins and professional papers on the stratigraphy and paleontology of the region. His work often focused on using fossil mollusks to define and correlate geological formations. He collaborated with the Florida Geological Survey, publishing significant works like the "Miocene gastropods and scaphopods of the Choctawhatchee Formation of Florida" (1930) and "Notes on the upper Tertiary and Pleistocene mollusks of peninsular Florida" (1939). He also described many new species and subspecies of fossil mollusks (pelecypods and gastropods), contributing significantly to the understanding of Cenozoic biodiversity. His work was crucial in establishing the boundary between the Oligocene and Miocene periods in the region and in understanding the Pliocene and Pleistocene faunas of North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia. Printed on coated stock with numerous illustrations, including a laid-in 8 3/4" x 7 1/2" color facsimile map of Apopka Creek Valley. 64 pp. 9" x 6". Tight, unmarked copy with minimal shelf wear. Paperback. Condition: New. The number of international human rights institutions and countries participating in them has risen dramatically in recent decades, precipitating debates about why countries make such commitments and whether these commitments improve member's human rights behavior. These debates have centered on a small number of human rights treaties, with far less attention paid to the larger number of international organizations (IOs) that aim to promote human rights. The Element argues and then demonstrates that state decisions about joining these IOs depends on the institutional design of the organizations, specifically sovereignty costs for member states. These costs stem from the constraints that IOs impose and vary substantially. Emerging democracies are most likely to enter high sovereignty cost IOs. Furthermore, organizations that generate higher sovereignty costs tend to produce better human rights outcomes than those generating fewer sovereignty costs for all regimes.
