Die Komplexität dieser Frage erfordert eine interdisziplinäre Vorgehensweise: Nach den philosophischen Grundlagen von Legitimation ist ihren historischen Konzeptionen nachzugehen. Hierauf bauen die normativen Verankerungen der heutigen Parteiendemokratien auf, die durch politikwissenschaftlich begleitete Debatten Nuancierungen erfuhren. Dabei entwickelten sich die nationalen Parteiendemokratien in der EU nicht isoliert voneinander - ihre Eignung zur Lösung des Legitimationsproblems muss stets aus europäischer Perspektive analysiert werden.
