El autor pone el acento sobre la semiótica narrativa por considerar que ha sido el campo trabajado con más consistencia desde la poética moderna por el formalismo ruso y el postformalismo bajtiniano. Pero el marco referencial de este trabajo rebasa decididamente la crítica de los movimientos anteriores para llegar a una propuesta más radical: el metaestructuralismo, planteado como una metateoría que establece su propio marco referencial rebasando las prácticas usuales en las ciencias sociales, y acercándose por su modo de operar al de las ciencias naturales. La teorización que se desarrolla en este volumen encaja con las discusiones actuales suscitadas por el postestructuralismo y por las búsquedas postideológicas y se apoya en las discusiones de la filosofía contemporánea. El metaestructuralismo se propone así como un tipo de fenomenología postestructuralista postideológica.
