Hay un vaso irrompible de té a medio tomar atrapando el sol entre el reloj pulsera y una estación de tren que emerge de la llanura más próspera de la tierra. -Anoche soñé-quiero decirle-que sacaba un pasaje para Bulgaria. Pero es difícil hablar de sueños a un hombre como mi padre. Ni sueños ni palabras. Escasas acciones (como luces de linterna), salvatajes prolijos de rincón. No entiende de plasticidad, no entiende de confianza, él sabe de los bordes del mundo y de sus héroes pero reduce su lírica a cenizas y las guarda en su valija de cartón. Aquellas estaciones de tren deciden su escenario, el único que acepta (por poco tiempo y esa es su tragedia: el exilio, el no volver.) Se diría que siempre lo espera una partida de cartas sobre una mesa improvisada con durmientes. El jefe de estación, el boticario, el comisario del pueblo, a veces nadie. A veces juega contra nadie, mi padre, en un vacío que domina. Un pacto de silencio con el destino. Ni sueños ni palabras. Ha roto con paciencia infinita, a lo largo de los años, todas mis cartas y conservó los alambres, cortaplumas, sacacorchos, una agujereadora anaranjada y un cuadro donde el mar está pintado con tan poca fe que no sabe si quedarse cuando llegue la noche. Ni sueños ni palabras. Aprieta mi mano sin fuerza, sus dedos se mueven buscando una oportunidad, no una certeza: mi presencia imposible en un muelle, una bodega, con un perro de otro que husmea un viento de río frente a un horizonte incendiado. -Anoche soñé que sacaba un pasaje para Bulgaria- quiero decirle. Llego a una ciudad amplia y resuelta, apoyada en un mar interior (un mar de manual, con muchos barcos enhiestos.) Inexplicablemente la ciudad está callada y resuenan mis pasos sobre las calles. Universidad, dice un cartel, y otro me envía a las ruinas de un templo griego que instala la armonía en mi ceguera. Feliz y salvaje por haber escapado, devoro una salchicha contra el portón de hierro de una fábrica. No me despertaré, me digo, no sabré nunca que no estoy tan lejos como pensaba, no me dolerá odiarte: como cien cuchillos, como mil inviernos, como el anillo que estrecha mi nombre y el tuyo, como el lustre opaco que le dimos al encierro, esta ausencia trabajada, padre, del color de tu piel.
