Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - During the last twenty years the problem of pattern recognition (specifically, image recognition) has been studied intensively by many investigators, yet it is far from being solved. The number of publications increases yearly, but all the experime…ntal results-with the possible exception of some dealing with recognition of printed characters-report a probability of error significantly higher than that reported for the same images by humans. It is widely agreed that ideally the recognition problem could be thought of as a problem in testing statistical hypotheses. However, in most applications the immediate use of even the simplest statistical device runs head on into grave computational difficulties, which cannot be eliminated by recourse to general theory. We must accept the fact that it is impossible to build a universal machine which can learn an arbitrary classification of multidimensional signals. Therefore the solution of the recognition problem must be based on a priori postulates (concerning the sets of signals to be recognized) that will narrow the set of possible classifications, i.e., the set of decision functions. This notion can be taken as the methodological basis for the approach adopted in this book.

Techniques such as V. L. B. I. , space probes, lunar lasers, etc . . . have greatly contributed to reduce the accuracy level to an angular equivalent of a few milliarc-seconds. HIPPARCOS will extend this trend to stellar astrometry and new proposals aim at gaining ano ther one or two orders of magnitude in observing precision. In paral lel, great progress has also been made in the theories of motion of ce lestial bodies and more rigourous treatments within the frame of general relativity become necessary. The definition of reference frames and of various coordinate times become also a major problem in the intercompa rison of observations produced by different methods. This Symposium gave to people using relativistic corrections in reducing their measurements or in constructing various theories of mo tion a chance to exchange their experience in the field and to confront it with theoreticians in general relativity. The Symposium was approved by the IAU in 1983 and it was organi zed by the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy of the USSR Academy of Sciences on May 28-31, 1985.
