Hardcover. Condition: As New. Aimed at addressing the lacunae in academic publications on women dancers in India, The Moving Space highlights the idea of the 'space' created, occupied and negotiated by women in Indian dance. It initiates a conversation between dance scholarship and women's studies, and brings together scholars from a multidisciplinary background, emphasizing that research and practice have roots in both these specific areas. This book takes dance as a critical starting point, and endeavours to create an inclusive discourse around the female dancer and the historic, gendered and contested 'space(s)' that accommodate or are created by her. Highlighting the scope and necessity of using feminist theories in understanding complex relationships between individual experiences, gendered representation and cultural constructions in the realm of dance in India, it traces the lived experience of the dancer-her movements, her voice and her subjectivity. This collection of essays contextualizes women dancers from diverse historical and social milieu-from temple to courtyard, from silver screen to dance bars and from national to regional stages-within the larger rubric of dance studies, and brings out stories of survival, struggle, empowerment, subjugation and subversion. …

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcovers with dustjacket. Partially signed by authors, and inscribed by them to the previous owner. This book is a comprehensive critical history of women artistes in Indian theatre and dance of the colonial and post-colonial periods. Its underlying premise is that one cannot evaluate such performances in the Indian context without looking at dance and theatre together, unlike the course taken by traditional scholarship. The author weaves together issues of sexuality and colonialism, and culture and society to provide a holistic account of women performers in India. The distinguishing features of this book are: a close reading of archival materials, field surveys and extensive interviews th.…

Paperback. Condition: New. This book, with its focus on the dancing body, is the first of its kind within the larger context of dance in India. The Dancing Body is a body that exists, survives, inhabits and performs in multiple space and time, by moving, laboring, migrating and straddling across geographic, cultural and emotional borders, writing different cultural meanings at different moments of time. In India, discourses around the body in dance have long been trapped within hagiographic histories in and around dancers and their dance. During the last few decades, however, significant scholarly inroads were made into the domain of dance by shaking up the stereotypes, assertions and labels, shaped and moulded by patriarchy, class, caste and power. This book brings together emerging discourses around dance and the body that have become central in the Indian nation-state. Contemporary discourses around identity politics, moral policing, politics of exclusion, and neo-liberal dispossessions vis a vis sexual labour, means of survival, pleasure and agency of dancers have helped frame the focus around labour, leisure and livelihood concerning the everyday existence of the body in dance. This volume will be of great value to students, researchers and scholars in dance, gender studies, cultural studies, and performance studies, with a particular interest in Asian and South Asian Studies. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of South Asian History and Culture. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of South Asian History and Culture.…
