Gus Hall and Communist Party USA political archive, 1960 to 1972, tracing Hall's return to public party leadership after his imprisonment, his participation in the international communist movement, and the CPUSA's 1970s program of antiwar mobilization, Black liberation, labor organization, and electoral campaigning. Hall served as the party's general secretary from 1959 until his death in 2000 and entered the 1972 election as the first of four Communist Party presidential campaigns he would conduct over the next twelve years. Two press photos and two political pamphlets outlining the Communist Party's goals during the Nixon administration, including immediate withdrawal from Vietnam, freedom for Angela Davis, opposition to wage controls, and a presidential ticket joining Hall with Young Workers Liberation League chairman Jarvis Tyner. Hall appears as the party's former steelworker and general secretary; Tyner, his vice presidential running mate in 1972 and 1976, appears as a former Teamster and national chairman of the Young Workers Liberation League. Hall's lead the CPUSA during a decade in which the American left was divided among antiwar, labor, and Black liberation movements in the wake of the social uprising and Red Scare of the 1960s. The archive records the Communist Party's platform and political goals in that time period. Hall's presidential candidacies began with the 1972 ticket advertised here, representing his efforts to preserve an independent Communist electoral presence in US elections. Moderate toning and handling wear to the pamphlets, with edge wear, corner creasing, and oxidation at the staples; press prints show light surface and edge wear, retained stamps and caption sheets, and minor verso residue.
