Item description from seller

Gus Hall and Communist Party USA political archive, 1960 to 1972, tracing Hall's return to public party leadership after his imprisonment, his participation in the international communist movement, and the CPUSA's 1970s program of antiwar mobilization, Black liberation, labor organization, and electoral campaigning. Hall served as the party's general secretary from 1959 until his death in 2000 and entered the 1972 election as the first of four Communist Party presidential campaigns he would conduct over the next twelve years. Two press photos and two political pamphlets outlining the Communist Party's goals during the Nixon administration, including immediate withdrawal from Vietnam, freedom for Angela Davis, opposition to wage controls, and a presidential ticket joining Hall with Young Workers Liberation League chairman Jarvis Tyner. Archive of four items comprising two original press photographs and two political pamphlets, 1960 to 1972. Archive includes: [1] Associated Press original press photo of Gus Hall at the Communist Party national committee meeting. Washington, D.C., February 4, 1960. Typed caption identifying Hall as the newly elected general secretary and stating that he had been chosen to succeed Eugene Dennis; verso bears filing text "HALL, GUS (NY) (COMMUNIST PARTY)" and a blue "FEB 4 1960" date stamp. Hall speaks into a bank of microphones with another party official seated behind him, documenting his assumption of national leadership after serving an eight year federal sentence under the Smith Act. [2] United Press International original press photo. Gus Hall at the World Consultative Meeting of Communist Parties. Budapest, February 27, 1968. UPI credit stamp and yellow caption sheet affixed to verso. Hall sits at the press table during a conference attended by delegates from sixty seven parties; the caption records unanimous approval of his motion sending "a warm message of support to North Vietnam against U.S. aggression." [3] Hall, Gus. Out of Indo-China! Freedom for Angela Davis! Our Goals for 1971 and How to Win Them: The Sharpening Crisis of U.S. Imperialism and the Tasks of the Communist Party. New York: New Outlook Publishers, August 1971. Printed wrappers, 60 pages. Text of Hall's July 9, 1971 report to an enlarged meeting of the CPUSA National Committee, issued weeks after publication of the Pentagon Papers and organized under headings including "The World Scene," "U.S. Capitalism," "The Movement for Black Liberation," "The Rank and File Movement," "Election Struggles," and "The Party." Hall opens with the secret Pentagon papers, denounces successive presidential administrations for the Vietnam War, calls for total American withdrawal from Indochina, and links the antiwar struggle to the campaign for Angela Davis's release and preparations for the party's twentieth national convention. [4] Vote Communist in 1972: Hall Tyner for President and Vice President. Beat the Freeze. Circa 1971 to 1972. Stapled illustrated campaign pamphlet with portraits of Hall and Tyner on the front and Richard Nixon beneath the slogan "BEAT THE FREEZE" on the rear. The text attacks Nixon's New Economic Policy and wage freeze as "legalized robbery," answers the administration's claim that wage increases caused inflation, and demands an end to the Vietnam War, restrictions on corporate profits, expanded public services, and the slogan "FREEZE INFLATION, NOT WAGES!" Hall appears as the party's former steelworker and general secretary; Tyner, his vice presidential running mate in 1972 and 1976, appears as a former Teamster and national chairman of the Young Workers Liberation League. Hall's lead the CPUSA during a decade in which the American left was divided among antiwar, labor, and Black liberation movements in the wake of the social uprising and Red Scare of the 1960s. The archive records the Communist Party's platform and political goals in that time period. Hall's presidential candidacies began with the 1972 ticket adve.
