Hardcover. Condition: New. While sixth-century Chinese aviators used kites to scout their enemies' positions, the technique didn't spread and it was another 1,200 years before the Montgolfier brothers launched a hot-air balloon and, with it, a new era for warfare. Tyler Morton traces the evolution in airborne reconnaissance from… that point to the Vietnam War, recording how airships and then aircraft became essential components of the military.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. From Kites to Cold War tells the story of the evolution of manned airborne reconnaissance.Long a desire of military commanders, the ability to see the terrain ahead and gain foreknowledge of enemy intent was realised when Chinese airmen mounted kites to surveil their surroundings. Kite technology… was slow to spread, and by the late nineteenth century, European nations had developed the balloon and airship to conduct this mission. By 1918, it was obvious that the airplane had become the reconnaissance platform of the future. Used successfully by many nations during the Great War, aircraft technology and capability experienced its most rapid evolutionary period during World War II. Entering the war with just basic airborne imagery capabilities, by V-E and V-J days, air power pioneers greatly improved imagery collection and developed sophisticated airborne signals intelligence collection capabilities. The United States and other nations put these capabilities to use as the Cold War immediately followed. Flying near the periphery of and sometimes directly over the Soviet Union, airborne reconnaissance provided the intelligence necessary to stay one step ahead of the Soviets throughout the Cold War. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Near Fine dj. First Edition. [nice clean tight book, with only minimal shelfwear; jacket shows some traces of wear along spine edges, but still bright and attractive overall]. This "powerful novel of a beautiful woman in politics" tells the story of a woman who accepts the offer of a nomination t…o Congress from the Democratic Party boss in her Manhattan district. An idealist who worshipped FDR, she believes this is her chance "to ride a white horse toward a better world." The first obstacle to her fiery ambition is actually that party boss himself (who in the book's first exchange of dialogue addresses her as "cookie"!), and she soon runs smack up against "the complexities and compromise of political life," including the corruption within the party itself. One of her primary antagonists, interestingly, is another woman, a brilliant and powerful publicity director, and she also has to put up with some shit from her own husband. By the way, this isn't one of those "large unnamed city" kinds of books: it's set in New York, and is geographically very specific: our heroine lives on West 103rd St., her publicity-woman adversary has an apartment on Orange Street in Brooklyn Heights, and hotels, restaurants and other locales are called out by name. The author's jacket blurb explains that she herself had been a candidate for the state legislature "some years ago," which provided her with a great deal of background knowledge for this novel, her first and only. Illustrated by (dj) Morton Kunstler (illustrator).

Elihu Root (1…845-1937): Secretary of War (1899-1904), Secretary of the State (1905-1908), Senator (1909-1915). Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912.; 2. Henry Cabot Lodge (1850-1924): Congress (1887-1893), Senator (1893-1924). Lodge is best known for his positions on foreign policy, especially for his opposition to the treaty of Versailles. The failure of that treaty ensured the US would not join the League of Nations.; 3. Charles Bonaparte (1851-1921): Sec. of the Navy (1905-1906), Attorney General (1906-1909). Bonaparte created the Bureau of Investigations, the precursor to the FBI. He was a great nephew of the French Emperor Napoleon.; 4. John Tyler Morgan (1824-1907): Senator (1877-1907), Brigadier General in the Confederate Army (1863-1865). After the death of James Clanton in 1872, Morgan allegedly succeeded him as the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan in Alabama.; 10. Oliver P. Morton (1823-1877): Governor of Indiana (1861-1867), Senator (1867-1877). Morton was a stalwart ally of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. He exceeded his constitutional authority by calling out the militia without approval, and during the period of legislative suppression he privately financed the state government through unapproved federal and private loans. He was criticized for arresting and detaining political enemies and suspected southern sympathizers.; 11. And an unidentified signer named McCormick. Signed.
