He received pharmacy training in Dresden and at the Berner Staatsapotheke (Bern state apothecary). From 1878 to 1880 he studied at the University of Berlin, earning his PhD at Freiburg in 1881, followed by a degree in botany from Berlin in 1884. In 1889 90 he took a study tour of India, Ceylon and Java. From 1890 to 1932 he was a professor of pharmacy and pharmacognosy at the University of Bern, serving as rector in 1908 09. Tschirch is known for his studies in plant anatomy and for his research of resins and anthraquinone glycosides.".

Februar 1833 in Werdenberg bei Grabs, Kanton St. Gallen; 12. Oktober 1909 in C…larens bei Montreux) war ein Schweizer Staatsrechtler, Politiker, Ethiker und Laientheologe. Bekannt wurde Hilty in jenen späten Jahren vor allem durch seine philosophisch-theologischen Schriften. Seine Darlegungen zur Frage «Was ist Bildung?» gründen in der Erkenntnis, dass allein durch die Überwindung des menschlichen Zwiespalts wahre Bildung und Glück zu erreichen sind. Mit seinen drei Bänden «Glück» erschienen ab 1890 hatte Hilty auch publizistisch grossen Erfolg. Die Glücksbände erreichten enorm hohe Auflagen, gingen noch während seiner Lebenszeit in die Zehntausende. Es kam zu Übersetzungen und Ausgaben ins Russische, Skandinavische, und sogar in Amerika erschien eine Sammlung mit Aufsätzen.
