Philadephia, PA, The Conchological Section of the Academy of Natural Sciences, 1865. 8vo. Three frontispiece portraits, viii, 387, [ii] pp.; numerous text figures, 27 plates of which 15 hand-coloured, and three tinted. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. = The complete first volume of this rare journal, with a prospectus for a proposed second volume. The portraits are of Isaac Lea, Augustus A. Gould, and C. B. Adams. The latter as an original daguerreotype, mounted. Some papers have many text engravings. The hand-coloured plates mainly show new fresh water bivalves. Board edges and spine rather worn, with the top spine end chipped and the rear joint detached. Internally, however, a very good, clean copy.
New York, Bailliere Brothers, 1865. 8vo (20.3 x 13.7 cm). 100, 3 pp.; two lithographed plates. Later black buckram with gilt title on the spine. = The Contributions to Conchology were a series of papers written by the American malacologist George Washington Tryon (1838-1888). They should not be confused with an earlier, identically titled series by the American malacologist C. B. Adams. This third volume, dedicated to Isaac Lea, contains eight small contributions on pp. 9-18, and two plates; and one large monograph in four parts, viz. Synonymy of the species of Streptomatidae, a family of fluviatile Mollusca, inhabiting North America. The title thus differs from that given in the general title of the volume. It consists of 82 pp., including an index. Bound in the rear: Prospectus of an American Journal of Conchology, dated November, 30, 1864, and including a coupon for subscription. Provenance: stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto and title page. Otherwise, a very good, clean copy.

Philadelphia, PA, Merrihew & Thompson (for the author), 1862. 8vo (22.7 x 14.6 cm). viii, 9-127, 9-16 pp.; one lithographed plate. Black buckram with gilt title on the spine. = The Contributions to Conchology were a series of papers written by the American malacologist George Washington Tryon (1838-1888). They should not be confused with an earlier, identically titled series by the American malacologist C. B. Adams. This third volume, dedicated to William Gabb, contains six small to medium-sized papers (including: A sketch of the history of conchology in the United States (pp. 13-32); and Synopsis of the Recent species of Gastrochaenidae, a family of acephalous Mollusca (pp. 33-62), and one large monograph, with a supplement (pp. 63-126; 9-12. All were published earlier in various scientific periodicals. Provenance: stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the second blank and title page. A very good copy.
Philadelphia, PA, The Author, 1873. 8vo (22.5 x 14.9 cm). 32 pp. (first seven with Roman page numbers); eight finely engraved, tissue-guarded plates by the author. Original printed wrappers. = The rare start of a seldom-seen work (there are no auction records after 1977). The rear wrapper, not usually preserved, contains a prospectus of the whole work, and conditions of the various editions offered. This part is of the plain edition, but as often with Tryon's publications, a hand-coloured version as well as one with plates in double suite, uncoloured and coloured, were available too (this one in a limited edition of 25 copies). The work was completed with 208 pp., and 44 plates. This work should not be confused with a similar-titled work by Timothy Conrad. Some light wear to the wrappers, otherwise very good. Nissen ZBI, 4173.

195 p., 74 lithographed pls, new cloth. Library stamps and markings (ex Library State University of Iowa).A rare well bound copy of this important monograph of these well known families. Many species (including types) are here for the first time depicted. The First series of the Manual of Conchology is a great rarity. Only about 65 (of 250) copies were sold to the general public.
Philadelphia, PA, the author, 1866. 8vo (21.1 x 13.7 cm). 159, xliii pp.; 18 lithographed plates in double suite: hand coloured, and uncoloured, sepia-tinted (for a total of 36 plates). Later olive buckram. Gilt bands and title on the spine. = The very rare double-suite edition of the first major work exclusively on the land snails and slugs of North America. Written by the American malacologist George Washington Tryon (1838-1888) and with fine illustrations by E. J. Nolan. Some species from brackish environments (Ellobiidae, Truncatellidae) are included. Provenance: stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto and title. This is a rare work as such.
