From the foreword: "The intention of this book is not to be an historical chronicle of Fitzroy or simply a list of sightseeing highlights - its aim is to make people curious about their suburb, to want to discover their own environment and to develop a feeling for the past and the present in their neighborhood. It also intends to show visitors that there is more behind the first impression. So the choice and order of the pictures is as arbitrary as the different impressions you would gain during any unhurried stroll through Fitzroy with no particular destination. Walking through Fitzroy on a quiet Sunday morning you will still discover back lanes where you can detect a trace of the bygone atmosphere of gold rush days. Around the corner an old factory brick wall is sprayed with colorful graffiti, looking like an exhibit in a modern art gallery. And then at last you meet the whole world in one street. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Contemporary full green morocco signed binding by Truslove & Hanson of Sloane Street in arts and crafts style. All edges gilt; spine with raised bands dotted in gilt; compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Regiment's motto Quo Fata Vocant (Whither the Fates call) tooled on front cover in gilt. Double dentelles, marbled endpapers. A lovely, well preserved copy.

Reprint of 1904 edition. 8vo. (6.2 x 4.1 inches). A little foxing to the blank free endpaper, otherwise a bright clean copy throughout. Finely bound, by or for, Truslove and Hanson of London, in beautiful early twentieth century full green crushed morocco, extra gilt. The spine with raised bands, ruled in gilt. Compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Both boards with elaborate gilt decorations. Gilt ruled lines and floral ornament on the board edges in the corners and on the top and bottom of the spine. Inner Dentelles ruled and decorated in gilt, surrounding White Moire silk centre pieces. Silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Some minor fading to the spine but overall this is a beautiful copy, the gilt tooling still gleaming.

16mo (14 x 11 cm), 8 leaves. Unpaginated. Unbound pamphlet, stitched with red thread. Printed on cream paper. Good: lightly-aged and with bumping at foot of spine. A scarce piece of book trade ephemera, the only copy on COPAC being at the National Library of Scotland. Text over four pages, including the statement that 'The bookplates executed by Messrs. Truslove & Hanson are from designs by Mr. F. G. House.' Four full-page bookplate designs: one on cover with words 'Ex Libris', and three named: John Wilfred Hardy, Mary D. Pinder and Herbert W. Plews. Fifth example tipped in on recto of second leaf ('Books are friends and what friends they are'). The firm's ornate armorial device, with motto 'In libris felicitas', is on the reverse of the last leaf. The full-page examples and device all have blank reverses.

With a frontispiece portrait of the author. Slight offsetting to endpapers from leather turn-ins, but A VERY FINE COPY, the lustrous binding entirely unworn, and the text quite clean, fresh, and bright. This handsomely produced edition of the perennially popular devotional was the second work issued by the bibliophilic Verulam Club, and the elegance of its printing is matched here by the equally lovely binding, bearing the very uncommon stamped signature of Truslove & Hanson. One of London's most prestigious bookshops, Truslove & Hanson counted among its elevated patrons the Queen of Spain, whoaccording to the obituary of one of its managers--bought a set of A. A. Milne. The shop was acquired by W. H. Smith in 1923. Named in honor of Lord Verulam (i.e., Francis Bacon), the Verulam Club was described in a contemporary review from "The International Studio: An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art" as a group "which aims to produce great examples of literature in a manner befitting their contents. . . . These books are printed in a very legible type on British hand made paper . . . , and considering their excellent get up, they are well worth the money." The "Imitation of Christ" depicts in four books the gradual movement of the soul away from earthly attachments toward Christian perfection in its union with God. According to Oxford Companion to English Literature, it "obtained wide popularity by its simplicity and sincerity and the universal quality of its religious teaching." Fortunately, previous owners have taken little advantage of the book's uplifting contents, and it appears little changed from the day it left the Truslove & Hanson premises.
